I Am Out Of Control!!!!

Since joining this forum I have fallen head over heals in love with the 30's fabrics. Until now I've bought reproduction fabric by the yard. Then I get this wonderful, great idea to gather up some vintage feed sacks and make a tied quilt with those. Keep in mind I was just going to "look" on Ebay at the feed sacks and buy a couple here and there. I've gone completely mad!!!! I can't stay away from Ebay and the feed sacks. I'm embarrassed to say how many I've bought in the past week so will keep that dirty little secret to myself. I've also joined a couple of the yahoo sites that buy, sell and trade sewing items and have bought several from people there. This is truly an addiction!!! Someone please turn off my internet service before I'm living under a bridge with my feed sacks. LOL!!!

Daylesewblessed 02-02-2012 06:48 AM

You will have all of the resources needed to make a wonderful quilt!

I just started a quasi crazy quilt using vintage embroidery pieces cut from pillowcases and surrounded with vintage fabrics. It is starting to look great and is so much fun to make!

Haven't gotten into the feed sack mode, but I have a plastic tub full of 30's fabrics for vintage looking quilts.

What's your eBay username? I'll put you out of misery by outbiding you on all lots. That will stop your addiction! JUST KIDDING! :D

Lori S 02-02-2012 06:53 AM

So do you have enough to make a quilt? If so get started on sewing/piecing/quilting, and limit your computer time. Another method is give yourself a "allowance" for the week/month when its gone its gone.
FYI those feed sack fabrics aren't going to be enough when you are "living under a bridge", or in a van down by the river.

Raggiemom 02-02-2012 06:53 AM

I can't stop buying fabric and patterns so I feel your pain!

luvstoquilt 02-02-2012 07:32 AM

I did the same thing..love someone on ebay named Willow...I now have enough so I try to stay away from there. Fabric is a real addiction don't let anyone fool you!

AnitaSt 02-02-2012 09:00 AM

I know how it feels! I love 30's fabrics too. I have some fragments from quilts made by my g-grandmother and want to find some vintage fabrics to set them in and make a wall hanging. I know eBay is the place to go but I know that once I get started, it's dangerous!! I did that with some quilt blocks last year and finally just had to walk away from eBay for awhile!!

So here's what I have so far. My favorite is the bag with the pink carnations on it. My Grandma loved them and I'd send her some when I knew she needed some cheering up for whatever reason. Love the comment about being the "bag lady". Hmmmmm...maybe I should change my ID on here to that. LOL!!! I contacted the person on Ebay I bought several from because a few that were in the box I knew I hadn't purchased since they just weren't something that would have caught my attention. She said to keep them since it was her fault and she had others she could send to the right person. Thought that was really nice of her.

okay forgive my ignorance, but what is a feed sack and what was its purpose and why are they so desirable now.

I may kick myself for asking, since this may become a new addiction.:D:thumbup:

gayle bong 02-02-2012 12:38 PM

That isn't so many, I'd say to keep going. And have fun! You need some darker ones unless you plan to use those light prints with 1930's solids. Just my opinion.

AnnieH 02-02-2012 12:40 PM

I didn't know what a feed sack was so had to google it (don't have them in the UK). They look so interesting. Would love to see the progress of your fascinating quilt.

Here's a great link on history of feed sacks and I can see why you are addicted.

Feed sacks were produced prior to the depression era and during that era and into the 40's. They are what flour, sugar, and other staples came in. They're fabric and during the periods many magazines published patterns from different manufacturers for clothes and/or quilts so more women would their brand. And yes.....like anything else that has to do with our quilting these are highly addictive! LOL!!

You haven't seen the amount I have ordered but just haven't gotten yet. HAHAHA!!!

luvTooQuilt 02-02-2012 01:52 PM

I did the same thing... I LOVE LOVE LOVE feedsacks.. Ive got two 30gal tubs of feedsacks- most from local auctions for pennies a bag... I haven't used any of them in a quilt yet- i don't have the heart to cut into the bags.. I love looking at the holes the strings left on the sides of the bags and wondered who bought this one and what were they planning on making...

So with that said I started buying 1930s reproductions and its still hard cutting into them but I do love the quilts they turn out to be..

Ya live once, so have fun!!

Careful PinkBerry, from your latest posts it looks like you have hit the road running in your quilting addiction.. lol..

stampinteresa 02-02-2012 08:07 PM

Thanks for the website history. That gave me a very good visual. I have grown up hearing about feedsack skirts that mom and her sisters would make from them. But I had another visual of canvas or burlap bags...not pretty sacks. I can see now why they could not wait for it to be their turn to get the bag or bags. (7 girls). Thanks for sharing. I may have to look into it for her a quilt. She would love it. But the sisters would then want one....Thanks again, Teresa

ragamuffin 02-02-2012 09:47 PM

Daylesewblessed, please post what you are doing with the embroidered pieces. I have collected many and am thinking about doing something with them too. Thanks

pasolovers 02-03-2012 03:54 AM

All of your fabric is lovely, I can see why you are addicted!!!!..

gsbuffalo 02-03-2012 05:34 AM

What a great ideal !

quiltlin 02-03-2012 06:53 AM

A friend of mine was cleaning out her aunt's house. They were doing a closet, she and her male cousin, and all of a sudden she started yelling I can't believe it, Ohmigosh!!! The male cousin thought she had found a stash of money but it was actually feed sacks from the 30's and 40's.....much better than money!!!!!

Years ago, animal feed and flour came in cotton sacks. The fabric was used to make clothing and scraps were made into quilts. My mother remembers wearing dresses and underwear made from the feed sacks. I have a few feed sacks that were came from my aun't stash after she died.

BTW, pinkberry, if you think you might become addicted, stay away from the feedsacks while you recover from the vintage machine addiction.;)

hoppa 02-03-2012 08:02 AM

Have noy gotten into buying those yet but have lots of fabric I need to use uo first

Rofl. About feeds sacks

quilty15 02-03-2012 08:59 AM

Feed Sacks...

Many years ago my sister and I were at an auction and purchased a huge box of them. We took them home and cut them in half so we each had the same prints. I used several of mine one time in a table runner. It is my favorite runner of all times. I have used it on my kitchen table for many years. It washes beautifully and the fabric has held up really well. Hmmm.....might have to get that box back out and play again.... Enjoy them!

annthreecats 02-03-2012 09:11 AM

Thanks for posting pictures of feed sacks. They were before my time and Mom was not a sewer so I had no idea they were so pretty. I'll have to add those to my "things to get" list.

SunniLoveAffair 02-03-2012 09:18 AM

That sounds like something I would love to do, too. Great idea!

SunniLoveAffair 02-03-2012 09:19 AM

My favorite is in the top photo with the red borders! So pretty.

needles3thread 02-03-2012 09:29 AM

I, too, love feed sacks even though I am old enough '70' to have worn those dresses made from that fabric.
Mother sewed for the 4 of us. She made sure my brother didn't wear clothing made from the flowered ones.
We had table cloths, curtains & tea towels made from them. 100 % cotton. Yes, the holes left from where the
string was removed is a proof certain way to tell them are authentic. Please keep showing pictures.
I am interested in the crazy quilt idea including vintage embroidery work.

Doreen 02-03-2012 09:31 AM

You need an intervention! Back away from the computer!

Caroline S 02-03-2012 11:10 AM

Great idea to post pics of our feed sack fabric. So many of the younger ones here on the QB don't know about them.

annies-best 02-03-2012 11:20 AM

better get your quilts made before they turn your electric off so you can keep warm under the bridge.... love it
I love to look at feedsack and find the patterns i remember momma having especially the ones i had dresses made of.
it is a good thing you are just discovering feedsack now when eBay 1st started people thought it was rare turns out not so rare it is everywhere. the prices were about 4 X as times as high 13 years ago when i started selling it as they are now

KimS 02-03-2012 11:48 AM

I think that's a great idea!!! Anyone with feed sacks take a few seconds, snap a picture and post it here so we can see them. I'd love to see others' collections.

GrannieP 02-03-2012 12:12 PM

Thanks, for sharing. I remember the sacks from my grandmother.Would love to have a few myself.I am in the process of quilting 1 of 3 toppers that my great-grandmother finished 50 years ago. She did the quilt top ,but never got around to quilting/binding them. I am new at this so it might take awhile.

urgodschild2 02-03-2012 12:51 PM

I have heard people mention these and i was surprised at how pretty they are. Thank you for posting the pictures. How much do they cost to buy and where do you get them from?????

craftymatt2 02-03-2012 01:51 PM
