when I hold up my very first effort at FMQ, I can see needle holes and even see light, they are that big. Just laying the quilt on the bed, I don't notice the holes. What am I doing wrong? Do I have the wrong size needle? one of the tensions off? or ?

You may want to use a smaller needle. I wouldn't mess with the tension because it is working for you. It is normal to see light and it will heal. Slowly if you don't wash to quilt and very quickly if you wash it.

What size needle are you using, and what thread?

Have to admit I don't know what size needle is in machine. It's batik fabrics and I'm using Coats & Clark all purpose thread.

That happens when I FMQ as well. I look at it as an opportunity to check for spaces I've missed. Sometimes it's hard to see where I'm going or where I've been with the stitching, especially if I'm using invisible thread. I hold the table runner or whatever up to the window and I can see if I've missed with anywhere with the FMQ. The holes disappear when I press it.

They should disappear with the first washing.

No worries, they will disappear when you wash it :D:D:D
