I really dont know what is wrong with me. I have been working...not so diligently however...on sorting my stash...cleaning up scraps. All so I can get my sewing room set up. The more I unpack...refold....sort, the more I cannot believe all the wonderful fabrics I have managed to collect. Now for the problem...I am having a terrible time getting rid of anything. I have been getting scraps together for ladies on here I offered some to...but I have way more then I need and I dont want to part with anything. WORSE is what happened just today. I wandered into the LQS.....found a "have to have" line of fabric and bought some!!!! What the heck is wrong with me????

BKinCO 01-27-2010 12:52 PM

Cuz you have a case of the "never can have enoughs"...how many of us on here have that??? :)

LOL Is there a cure?? Or should I just resign myself to it and get more storage??

Clothfiend 01-27-2010 12:58 PM

"What the heck is wrong with me????

You have a serious case of the "clothfiend" - no one's found a cure for it yet, but it's easily treatable with periodic doses of fabric.

quilt addict 01-27-2010 01:01 PM

Guess I have to ask a dumb question, what's the problem?

Barbm 01-27-2010 01:01 PM

I'm trying- very hard- not to buy more fabric until I make a dent in what I have.

To help- I've been going through my stash and pulling fabrics for the projects I promised this year. And- giving some away to some people here on the board.

I'm organizing as I go and was pleasantly surpised that 2 tubs are about 1/4 empty. Progress!

Now to keep myself off the internet shopping sites!

Barbm 01-27-2010 01:03 PM

just so you know far I still have to go- that equates to 1 tub 1/2 full. I have 15 tubs of fabric.

Put that way- I still have a loooong way to go.

Boston1954 01-27-2010 01:09 PM

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING is wrong with you. We fall in love with a particular print and even when the last bit is too small to use, we have difficulty parting with it. I think back to when I bought some and how much it cost. There can be many reasons for wanting to hang onto it. It is human nature.

mytwopals 01-27-2010 01:43 PM

There is nothing wrong. You are only playing the "Quilter's Game of Life". The only rule to the game is - "She/He who dies with the most fabric wins". Enjoy the game, as long as it lasts. And we hope it lasts a long time for you. :-D

Debo 01-27-2010 02:06 PM

I know what you mean. I'm a newbie to quilting but have scrapbooked for many years. With scrapbooking, you can never have enough paper but to my surprise, when I started quilting I realized you can never have enough fabric. I guess I just exchanged one addiction for another!!

Yeap. My question as well. If you figure it out let us know. I don't think they have AA for us quilters.

sewnsewer2 01-27-2010 02:28 PM

You're a fabric addict like the rest of us. LOL

I don't see a problem either!

Bobbinwinder 01-27-2010 03:32 PM

Well, I'd really like to help...so, I'm going to suggest that you start sewing..sewing and sewing... now, that was simple, wasn't it? LOL Seriously, you should have sought advice BEFORE you started diggin' into those treasure chest tubs of woven gold. Sometimes they are better left just as they are until a need becomes VERY apparent...as in, the lqs closes or the credit cards expired. Perhaps you should have some chocolate...oh, that's something I could actually do for you...yum...feeling better? Smile big!

janRN 01-27-2010 03:43 PM

I've been doing the same thing-going thru and sorting small pieces of fabric. I look at some of it and think: I don't remember this one! Do elves sneak in extra scraps?? Also I found of few that made me think: WHAT was I thinking when I bought this??
Do either of these things happen to any of you or am I just the only nut here? LOL

Ha. I just went through cleaning my sewing room and yes I must be a nut too.

Honey 01-27-2010 04:14 PM

Hey, every one has something that they love. I just happen to love stacks and stacks, boxes, bins and drawers of fabric!!

missbehavin 01-27-2010 04:27 PM

LOL... This is great.. I look forward to having my stash of precious fabric.. it is like tangible gold, that we can work with, be creative with and yes an addiction.. but honestly I don't think there is a cure.. and because most of us quilters like our addiction, I don't believe anyone is looking to find a cure anytime soon.. Now if there was a brilliant person that actually designed a cure for our addiction.. Answer honestly.. Would any of us actually take the cure?? Me personally.. NO, NO, and Absolutely NO!!

Ninnie 01-27-2010 04:32 PM

I am still waiting on the problem part!! LOL

I don't see anything wrong with you.
Grab a glass of wine, go pet your stash and repeat....I love my fabric, I love my fabric, I love my fabric........:) :) :)

Shemjo 01-27-2010 04:54 PM

This is a problem? I LOVE going shopping at home in MY stash when the weather outside is bad. Great time for sewing!

sewjoyce 01-27-2010 05:42 PM

Personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with you. I think we all feel this way

Astramorgaine 01-27-2010 05:43 PM

I think it goes along with the hobby. I'm an avid gardener, so when springtime comes along, I will be in the nurseries acquiring more plants I don't need, but it makes my soul smile. The same with fabric shopping. I will spend hours online looking at the different colors and patterns even if I don't have a dime to spend! When I go into hobby lobby or joanns I always check the remnant bins first. I've found some good deals in there. Haven't sewn anything with what I found yet, but one day those fabrics will end up in something that will make someone else happy too.

medots 01-27-2010 05:54 PM

get your self some mouse traps and set them on the table
This worked for my hubby as our cat would do the same thing. Rember to set the traps it will not take long to break the habit

sharon b 01-27-2010 09:53 PM

Hi my name is Sharon and I am addicted to fabric  LOL Welcome to the club 8-)

Deb G 01-27-2010 10:00 PM

There's nothing wrong with you. It's part of our unique personality to want/need more of the thing that makes us happy. Then we cut it into pieces and sew it back together to create a work of art.

Clothfiend 01-28-2010 05:58 AM

Another thought - if you call all that fabric your "Collection" it immediately falls into a category that includes things like pieces of art work, crystal, antique dishes, silver, gold, etc. and absolutely no one expects you to do anything with your collection but enjoy it. Of course, now that you have it all laid out you might want to consider offering tours (at a minimal price of course) so others could enjoy your collection as well. You know, just a thought..:)

lindy 01-28-2010 06:03 AM

Glad to hear someone else has 15 totes full of fabric. Guess I'm not alone after all!

quazyquilter 01-28-2010 06:11 AM

I think it's called a "Fabricholic". My baby sister even got me a bumper sticker that says it. She knows me only too well... :-)

I, too agree, WHAT IS THE PROBLEM, GIRL????

Teresa 54 01-28-2010 06:20 AM

Well, I had the same problem when I had to move my studio, bags and bags of fabric - heavy fabric. I decided at that point I needed to scale down. Like you, I buy good quality quilt weight fabric from quilt shops. I thought about "how do I buy fabric"? I buy by the color, not by the design, which made it so much easier to use what I have. All fabric is on open shelves (3) huge bakers racks, where I can easily see and access each piece, it is arranged by color. By arranging this way, I found I will use what I have instead of going out shopping. Look at it this way, the less time shopping, the more time you have to sew.
Join a stash busters class at your local shop - great way to use fabric. Teach a class and have fabric packets for the students for a few dollars. One day I screwed up a drafted pattern, I apologized and gave everyone a yard of fabric from my stash!
keep a tally of all the money you don't spend and go to a quilt camp with fabric from your stash - A Challange. Good Luck, Teresa-Teresa's Quilt Studio

Kimcatlou 01-28-2010 06:49 AM

I don't only have a problem with too much fabric, but also too many craft supplies, and also too many books. And my husband and I are getting ready to move into a retirement home.

Do you think there might be some long life pills? I might be able to use most of my stuff if I had 100 more years!
I am really working hard at gathering stuff to give away, but then I think that I just might want to make something with much of it!

OmaForFour 01-28-2010 06:54 AM

I don't think there is a thing wrong with you. You have a healthy hobby of collecting fabrics. Can you please tell me what LQS stands for?

dsj 01-28-2010 06:57 AM

I so know the feeling, It is the most contagious case of beautiful cloth fever ever and it doesn't go away, I have had it for several years now. It gets worse when there is a quilt show around. I can't even get down the first isle before I start getting light headed, upset stomach, can't think straight symptoms. So I head for the food area to gather myself, drink some coffee, eat some chocolate, (it seems to calm me)then I'm okay and I can finish the day strong and broke. I just ask, How can they continue to make beautiful fabric?

Jingle 01-28-2010 06:59 AM

LQS - Local Quilt Shop -- I am still waiting to hear what your problem is, I haven't heard a thing yet that sounds like a problem. Please explain...

dsj 01-28-2010 07:00 AM

oh yeah, I forgot to say because it is so beautiful I haven't used one piece of it that I have bought from the quilt shows or stores. I just sit and look at it. I am to scared to cut it up. I need to buy ugly fabric. That might be the cure.

dsj 01-28-2010 07:15 AM

I guess we are all normal then, I really don't feel like I have a problem, I do love it after all. I'm normal Yippee!!!!!

KarenBarnes 01-28-2010 07:17 AM

I say just relax and enjoy it! :)

PamQuilts 01-28-2010 07:21 AM

Jan, I so the same thing. I've been going through my scraps for a couple of months now. I just finished a quilt using some of them but it doesn't even look like I made a dent. Some of my fabric is really pretty. But, like you, I look at some of them & think, What posessed you to buy this one? I keep thinking I'll do better, not buy so much. But, I've been thinking that for the last 20 years! Oh well. I have to go to Houston today. I'm sure I'll stop by a fabric store...I'm a hopeless case! :)

SSTeacher 01-28-2010 07:25 AM

I think that it is positively marvelous that we ALL have the same symptoms of a disease that seems to enhance our life. Think of it this way, if we stopped BUYING fabric, quilt shops would have to close their doors and we certainly would not want THAT to happen. The more scraps, the more quilts we have made. Scraps make great quilts and smaller projects. My problem continues to be "organizing" them but I have started, I have started, I have started......
