I need help with a binding question.
 

I would like to do my binding with the fabric that matches the back of my quilt, however, I only have enough fabric to make the binding strips 2 inches wide after the strips are sewn on to my quilt. Will making the binding 1/4 inch less than normal screw up my quilt or will it be OK as long as the quilt police do not see it? Your assistance will be appreciated. Thanks, Betty

I took a class from a national teacher that cut hers 1 3/4 inch wide. Then the next month we had a program from a shop owner and she cuts hers 3 inches. I don't think it really matters.

I had a pieced looked at by the QP, and the binding was one of the things she didn't say anything about -- lol -- so I agree with SQ that anything goes.

2 inches is definitely enough if you have a thin to moderate loft batting. It would not be enough for high loft. What you might want to do is make a test quilt out of some scrap fabric (using the same batting as is in the quilt), cut a 2-inch strip of scrap fabric, and make sure it's going to work for you in terms of covering the edge adequately. You will want to keep a 1/4" seam and miter a corner on your test.

Each time I bind a quilt, I cut my binding and pin it to the front and fold it over to note where the edge of the binding will end ... to see if it will cover the machine stitch from the front. If not, I adjust where I stitch the binding to the front so I have enough to turn over. There is no "rule" that your binding has to be X number of inches, or it has to be sewn X inches from the edge of the quilt. I would definately use up the fabric that I have and adjust the binding rather than buy more fabric or choose a binding that I liked less.

Try making a sample quilt sandwich then binding with a 2" stash strip. If you can make it work then you are good to go.

I always cut my binding 2 inches. I prefer it because you can square up your quilt easier, but there still is enough batting to fill the smaller binding.
