DW wife is out of town so I have been sewing up a storm. She is visiting her sisters and told them I had made potholders for my mom. They all said I what some so I am in the potholder business. Don't need help with that.

I need help with a Log Cabin quilt I have also pieced. It is scrapy very scrapy 30 blocks 10 inches square. I have it layed out in the lightening pattern. I also want to lay it out in the barn raising pattern. The quilt is five blocks wide and six long = 30 blocks. Does the barn raising pattern have to be square to work? I have scearched the board for pictures and found some but they are of bigger quilts. Any help would be appreciated.

DW has the camera or I would take pictures.

Maybe, Gary, you could do the off-center one. I've seen that done in a wall hanging and it was awesome! Wish my husband would make a quilt - I'd go away!!! Have fun.

Not at all. If you start laying out your blocks from the center of the quilt out, you'll see how they come together. Put four blocks in the center in the position you want them to be in and then build out with the other blocks from there.

there are no hard and fast rules. it is your quilt. lay it out and see if you like it. then go for it.

If this is a double post .. sorry
If you want the barn raising to be symetrical it needs to have an even number of blocks in lenght and width. But you do not need the same number of both lenght and width.

Find the log cabin book by Eleanor Burns, she has good information and easy directions to follow.

My avatar is Log Cabin Barn Raising, and is 6 sqs by 7 sqs. I've done the actual square barn raisers as well, but, no it doesn't have to be square. I liked the way mine turned out using the odd number squares. Good Luck and please post pictures when finished.
