I need to make a baby quilt

I need to make a baby quilt by December for a spring baby. She wants colorful fabric, bright and cheery. I would like to make a fool proof baby quilt. One without flying geese, or anything too hard for sure. What would be a cute pattern for a baby quilt? I was thinking about a churn dash with sashings and corner blocks around each block. Is there an easier, prettier baby quilt pattern I could make? I don't work well under pressure and this is pressure to me. I usually just make quilts I like and then give them away to people I want to give them to. I have never made a baby quilt before. Any good ideas?

There are lots of awesome panels that you can add borders to and have a beautiful quilt in short time.

MadQuilter 08-05-2012 08:46 AM

I've been making the Disappearing 9-Patch with assorted kid prints. Easy, fast, and looks great.

This would be the easiest way to make a darling baby quilt!

3d pinwheel quilts are fast and easy and look great too.

I like to make snowball blocks with kid fabrics, mixing them with nine patch makes a fun pattern.

Evy 08-05-2012 09:56 AM

There is a pattern at clotilde.com that is adorable. I've used it twice and have seen it posted here (or on the old QB-sorry not sure which). It's really simple.
it's called Diamond Patch

Neesie 08-05-2012 10:00 AM

Warm Wishes is super easy and looks like it isn't. You could make the focus fabric with "I Spy" type squares, to make it even more interesting.

GagaSmith 08-05-2012 10:10 AM

I agree with MadQuilter. d9p is very easy.

Here's a tut by Missouri Star QC. You wouldn't have to do a border like her's.

A baby is such a special person; please don't make it just a smaller version of an adult quilt. Make it shout BABY loud and clear. That child will probably have a good 75-80 years for an adult quilt, give it a definite BABY quilt now.

Tartan 08-05-2012 10:16 AM

I second Warm Wishes. It will look really cute with a juvenile print in the focus block with coordinating fabrics for the pieced blocks. Warm Wishes is basically a Rail Fence block (the center strips is wider than in rail fence)with a plain block. It's easy but looks really nice.

I'm making Charming Baby (#1146) from Whistlepig Creek for our 3rd grandbaby due the end of this month. It has Prairie Points and has gone together very quickly and easily! In fact it went together so quickly I have time to hand quilt it :)

I love to make baby quilts. Here is a wonky log cabin top that I made.(Haven't got it quilted yet) It was really easy because nothing had to match. All you need is a cute focus fabric.

Iamquilter 08-05-2012 01:48 PM

Another very easy quilt is get a focus fabric and make 6 inch blocks and then get two co-ordinating fabrics to make 3 inch blocks another piece for a 1 1/2 inch border and another piece for a 3 inch border. It takes 1 yd for focus fabric, 1/2 yard for other two fabrics 3/8 yd for 1st border and 1 yd for outside border and then 2 1/2 yds for backing and binding if using the same fabric. Will try to post a picture if I can .

I've made pinwheels in colorful kids fabrics, or simple blocks using I spy fabrics. I also made a double Irish Chain that turned out really cute using pastel fabrics for the chain with small appliques of ducks, stars, moons, and other assorted kids things between the chains. For something really fast and simple the panels are great or get a themed kids fabric and fussy cut for centers of blocks with simple borders around each block. So many possibilities. Do a google search for free children's quilt patterns for lots of ideas.

I recently quilted two very cute ones. This one was just simple 4 patch alternated with a plain white block and set on point. You could easily substitute brights for the pastels and because you have posted in the past you use a LAQ, quilting wouldn't be a problem:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...t-t195439.html

This next one was even simpler, 16 log cabin blocks with all whites on one side and all colors on the other set in a barn raising pattern. If I remember correctly the logs were 1 1/2" finished so they were made with 2" cut strips. The center square was 2" finished so the piecer started out with a 2 1/2" square. Again you can easily replace the pastels used with brights.

I would think either of these quilts could be made by your deadline as long as your LAQ has an opening.

Here's an easy pattern. Just finished a baby boy quilt using it. Haven't taken pics yet.

I agree; I love a snowball baby quilt! I made this one using a Moda "Terrain" charm pack

I recently finished making these two baby quilts from my new nephews arriving this fall:)
The pinwheels one was espeically easy, just use some baby friendly fabrics in the squares and alternate pinwheels. The cubes were a bit more involved, but I love how they turned out.

I just finished a baby quilt for a soon-to-be grand-nephew using cartoon helicopter fabric as the theme fabric. His father is a helicopter pilot. You can find the pattern for the strippie quilt here http://www.maryquilts.com/quick-strippie/

My favorite baby quilt pattern is Yellow Brick Road. I've made about five of them. One of these days I'll have to make a lap size for myself. For simple block patterns I like Antique tile from quilter's cache, I've made two of those and i'm on my third trip around the world quilt. I also love Bonnie Hunter's patterns on www.quiltville.com, specifically the bricks and stepping stones with I spy fabrics and the crayon box pattern with my scrappy brights. Generally unless the mom wants pastels I go the brighter the better for all of my quilts!

you could make it an i spy with a simple frame around the blocks

I made a baby quilt like that and the little boy, he was 2 1/2, and mother really liked it.

The Warm Wishes is a great quilt to make and easy but doesn't look easy. Go to the Project Linus website for directions. Made with a bright kid print and 3 fabrics chosen to go with would look great.

MaryMo 08-06-2012 06:49 AM

I like I-Spy quilts .... made with baby or child prints in the colors requested. I-Spy quilts are always fun to explore in quiet times.

DeniseP 08-06-2012 10:32 AM

I like the I spy idea as well. I make them a little bigger than a baby quilt so they can have it as a toddler when it can be a "blankie" and a learning tool.

clamb27 08-07-2012 03:06 AM

I also think the little rag quilts are adorable easy, soft, fast and cute
for babies.

That's an adorable YBR! Here's one I made recently. Also, I agree about Quiltville. There is a pattern there called "Streak of Sunshine" that I've made about a zillion times (it's a baby quilt) & here's one of those, too.

A rag quilt with specific baby patterns or assorted works up beautifully. You get to do it your way, and mix and match as many blocks as you like....a matching diaper bag is adorable....

sparkys_mom 08-07-2012 03:43 AM

Look at the patterns on Quilts For Kids - they are all very simple - it's really your choice of fabric that makes the quilt.http://www.quiltsforkids.org/patterns/

Check out Anka's Treasures. http://www.ankastreasures.com Her newest book Little Quilts 4 Little Kids is so cute! Can't wait to try them all. I've made several of her quilts and find her patterns very straight forward and easy to follow.

This would be my first choice as well, making it with a nice soft flannel, all cuddly, just reminds me of something fit for litte ones. These and so quick and simple too.

There are so many adorable panels you can get at the quilt shop and all you have to do is add a border and quilt it. Also to go with it there are grow charts and they are so cute. There is a garife and Bird. I have one of each to put together and a matching quilt. Both could be for either boy or girl.

This would be my suggestion also. Have made 2 baby quilts using this pattern, goes together pretty fast and easy.

JEM2012 08-07-2012 05:14 AM

I third the snowball quilt pattern - so easy, and even easier if you do it without the sashing! I just made a baby quilt like this, I'll try to post a picture later.

BettyM 08-07-2012 05:16 AM

I think Warm Wishes would be my vote, also.
