Yesterday I was hiding my thread ends using one of those self threading needles. Of course I frown (read can't) on using thimble. I start out using one two stiches later I need to take it off. Sooner or later it stays off. Didn't think I was jabing my finger, of course I was. So last night I put some Blistex (for cold sores) on my finger tip. This morning it was almost better. My new cure all. LOL.

I have the same problem...started a thread here once on thimbles...I recently bought the Ultra Thimble....It is a fingertip shield...look like the top part of a thimble and it sticks to your finger with a little adhesive circle...that can be reused ..bought at Connecting Threads...it did fall off occasionaly but for certain jobs it helps...and it is not really expensive...

Sewing with a thimble takes practice and just like FMQ work on a sample till you get comfortable. It really does save your fingertips. There are no rules just preference. Make sure you have the right size and I always wet my finger before Putting the thimble on so it stays in place.

I like using a homemade thimble I make out of a thin leather like deerskin. Just wrap the leather around where you want the protection to be...cut to size plus a little extra for a seam and sew the seam.

Thanks for the tip about the Blistex. I never use a thimble and my fingers are always sore.

I just can't imagine sewing without a thimble. Once I found one big enough for my finger, I've not sewn by hand without one. My first quilting teacher forced me to get one and learn to use it, and I'm very thankful she was sooooooo pushy <g>.

I had one of those self threading needles go in my finger and it was heard to get out you should use a thimble (did not I will not use those needles again)
