I stumbled upon something very cool

You guys probably know but it's news to me! I was making my sister a baby blanket (she's due to pop any time now!) and had the stencil I wanted to use for the quilt pattern. In the past I've used the markers from Joann's or chalk but I didn't have any. Besides that the markers and pencils aren't really ideal imo, and chalk... well, it's chalk.

So I'm looking around wondering what I can use without running to the fabric store and I come across my kid's old Crayola washable markers. Big pack, multi-colored and nice tip. I try it and keep my fingers crossed hoping I'm not ruining the quilt.

I finish up and cross my fingers as I put it in the wash and it all came out! It was perfect! I can't believe I hadn't heard of this before or thought of it myself! What do you all use?

joyce888 01-16-2013 07:18 AM

Don't know if it has been mentioned before but it's a great tip and worth mentioning again.

QuiltnNan 01-16-2013 07:35 AM

thanks for sharing your experience

I, too, love the Crayola washable markers for marking fabric. I once left a project, marked for over 6 months, then finished and washed it. All the markings came out in the wash. They are terrific... and they come in different colors for good marking on different fabrics.

I use them all the time....Love em! I even accidentally ironed (with steam) a quilt marked with markers once and it still washed clean!

Most of the colors was out quite well, but in my experience YELLOW won't wash out. Seems strange, since it's the lightest color, but it's NOT come out for me.

janedee 01-16-2013 07:50 AM

Yes they work good I also use artists watercolour pencils but I always check before each project that the colour I am using will wash out - just in case!!

mighty 01-16-2013 07:50 AM

Wow, I had not heard that before, thanks for the tip!!!

quiltsRfun 01-16-2013 05:24 PM

I use them too. But don't leave the markings too long before washing. Ask me how I know.

yellowwroses 01-16-2013 05:30 PM

new to me can't wait to try. thank you
judy

azwendyg 01-16-2013 05:34 PM

I also use Washable Crayola markers occasionally, and haven't had a problem with removal yet. I do test them on the fabric I'm using first just to be sure.

kay carlson 01-16-2013 05:34 PM

This is one of those DAH --- why didn't I think of that?! Thanks for sharing this tip. I am shaking my head. I always purchase the washable markers for the grandkids and never even thought of using this for quilting.

alikat110 01-16-2013 06:39 PM

Great tip....since I'm on a fabric moratorium, I think I'll spend some $$$$ on gadgets I've been wanting. I'll add this to my list!!!!

lynnie 01-16-2013 07:23 PM

I use them all the time. Roseart is even cheaper and washes out.
But, i always ck on a scrap first.

owlvamp 01-16-2013 07:26 PM

I haven't heard of using them either.

KwiltyKahy 01-16-2013 07:33 PM

Sounds like the Crayola folks should be advertising at the LQS

LoisM 01-16-2013 08:22 PM

It's new to me too so thanks for sharing!

Minister 01-16-2013 10:03 PM

New to me also. Thanks!

gzuslivz 01-16-2013 10:07 PM

Don't tell the Crayola Co. If they market them for quilters, the price will triple!

QuiltnLady1 01-16-2013 10:27 PM

I use the washable crayola markers as well (other brands are not as reliable). They have to be good -- just think of all the angry parents if they could not get marker out of the kids clothes. I have the same philosophy about using elmers washable glue -- it's aimed at consumers who are guaranteed to get it on their clothes and the parents want to get it out.

NNOOOOOOOah - they might raise the price.........

Hartllk 01-17-2013 03:52 AM

Frixion pens work extremely well for marking fabric too. When you iron the fabric the ink disappears. HONEST. You can buy these pens at Staples.

HillCountryGal 01-17-2013 04:21 AM

The things a person learns here! Thanks for sharing your experience. Probably never would have crossed my mind!

WisWis 01-17-2013 04:23 AM

Thanks also for sharing your tip.

mermaid 01-17-2013 04:24 AM

I've mentioned using the washable pens several times--just not the Crayola brand. I get mine at the "Everything's a Dollar" store...20 diff colors in pkg for $1. They are great!

cmierley 01-17-2013 04:31 AM

I hadn't heard about that either. I once used yellow green chalk on a quilt and it didn't wash off. I had used it go mark stars. So I then marked the stars with yellow. Figured if the chalk didn't wash off on this material make the stars yellow at least.

cmierley 01-17-2013 04:33 AM

Talking about marking a quilt, has anyone used freezer paper to free motion quilt a design? If so, does the paper come off in the wash? I hate ripping it off because its ripping off some of my stitches no matter how much I try holding the stitches down.

sew_itnow 01-17-2013 04:41 AM

I am a Dollar Store user also. I buy their washable markers and use them on my fabric and they have always washed out.

Suzette316 01-17-2013 05:21 AM

What an awesome tip Dragonomine! Thanks for sharing!! I have yet to find a marking pen I'm truly happy with, so I'm going to give this a try. :)

If you like them, remember to buy them at the "going back to school sales." :-)

Me too...but with the blue water soluble sewing pen.
I've been kind of chicken to try the crayola thanks for the tip.....also...if you like chalk but run out you can use corn starch.

solstice3 01-17-2013 05:50 AM

Thanks for the info... I wouldn't have thought of it but it is a great tip

quilt queen 01-17-2013 05:53 AM

Sometimes the answer is right in front of us and we don't go out of the box to see it...thanks for the tip...have plenty in the grandgirls color box.

dray965 01-17-2013 05:53 AM

I had a quilt that I put back for 4 years that was marked with the brown marker. Finally quilted it, crossed my fingers and washed the quilt. It came out with no sign of that 4-yr old marking. Thought sure that after 4 years it would be permanent....not!

nhweaver 01-17-2013 05:54 AM

I am going to the dollar store today to buy a pack. I have been using pounce, and frisson pens, and will try the washable pens to trace stencil designs on my hand pieced and quilted farmer's wife sampler. I will test sample first. Great idea!

Lorileik 01-17-2013 05:56 AM

I never thought to try them. Thanks for posting because it sounds like a great idea! I will definitely get some.

luciab 01-17-2013 06:41 AM

I was in a store the other day and while waiting on line to pay my attention was drawn to those Crayola pens. My instinct was to buy them, but I didn't. I'll be going back to get them now. Should have followed my instinct.

gramquilter2 01-17-2013 07:22 AM

Thanks for the tip, I would have never thought to try wash-able markers!

I had used tracing paper and made my stitches small and that worked pretty good, but now they have a water soluable paper...not sure where you buy it since I haven't tried it yet...

nativetexan 01-17-2013 08:01 AM

I did not have good luck with crayola markers. so i don't go there now.
