by my husband, as he was watching the girl at Walmart cut my fabric, "Uh oh."

See, half way between my 8 bolts of fabric that I had ready for her to cut, her shift changed, or something. A new girl took over where she left off. To him, standing in the background as he always does, watching, but allowing me the freedom to have a conversation, it did look like what he said happened - "I think you might have worn out the first one. I guess that's what they get for hiring amateurs!"

Every once in awhile, that $2 fabric is of really good quality. If there's someone there, and I don't have to ring the bell to get someone, I'll get some.

Amateurs! LOL I remember one time there was NO ONE to cut, so the guy in the electronics section next door came. He was actually pretty good at cutting my fabric, he followed my instructions EXACTLY!

I even put the bolts where I got them from when she was finished with them - I like the Walmart by me.

Oh yeah, just remembered the story continues - Like we always do, my husband takes the cart and gets in line, while I go and get another cart, so what overfills one cart, goes in 2 (he really tends to smoosh bread and bananas if we don't)
I put stuff in one cart, and then start with the other. Of course my bags of fabric went in the second, as did the eggs. He asked me if I would trust him with the fabric, but I told him "Notice the eggs? I trust that you know enough to throw them at whoever tries to take my fabric, don't ya? Keep in mind I have your lunchmeat in mine!"

The cashier just laughed, and seemed to nod knowingly

So glad you found good deals..I have found the same since they enlarged our fabric department- more selection and quality. There is a woman named Earline that has been in the fabric department forever..she is SO friendly and knowledgable..I hate when she is not there. I know some will never buy in a "big box" store, but as big as it is, I feel at home in my Wally World fabric Dept!!

Some WalMarts are much better than others ... depends upon district managers and store managers.

That's a great story. I have found when I go late at night the fellow from hardware/fishing/auto/ and electronics comes and I always benefit (rolls eyes) from his cutting, seriously as much as 1/4 or 1/3 of a yard. ( I hope Wal-Mart doesn't read here!)I have to say no one at Wal-Mart has ever shorted me of course several of the regular ladies that work in that department and I are on a first name basis...:thumbup:

I wish our Walmart would get their fabric department back. It's not due to come back until 2014.
We have to drive 40 miles to the nearest Hancocks or Hobby Lobby. We do have a new Fabric Store moving into an old western store here in town. I'll be in trouble on that one since I will have to drive by it everytime I go to town.

The guy from the paint department cut my broadcloth the other day. He had a nice pipe tobacco smell about him.

One Lady at our Walmart that cuts fabrics, said she didn't know why they don't have someone to cut it. If they don't know how they cut a little extra just in case. At inventory time they come up short.

The women cutting it cuts exactly, no extra. I'm thinking I need to know when no woman is their and get a guy to cut it. HMMMMMMM.

As far as I know, it's 'corporate' that decides which stores get fabric.

Shrinkage is understandable. Doesn't every retailer deal with shrinkage?
I am certainly not pointing fingers anywhere when I say this, but there have been reports of truckloads of fabric bolts missing from stores. Not saying which ones, and there were reports of 2 different retailers with bolts missing. I also do not know if anyone was ever prosecuted for these instances. But there is one part of the shrinkage problem.

I like the guy from the sporting goods dept to cut the fabric. He rolls his eyes when he gets a bolt that has been cut crooked and automatically adjusts it so it is straight again. He is actually quicker than some of the assigned workers to the fabric dept as he also knows how to work the "gun" and get the printout of prices. I'd always like for him to cut my fabric....and he is quite pleasant about it too.

My Walmart has tons of the ugliest Christmas fabric ever seen.
The other fabrics are ok but the Christmas is awful.

I hate that our Walmarts here in New England don't carry fabric anymore. We have JoAnn's Fabric which stinks for bargains they used to have great bargain fabrics when Walmart had a fabric department but since they walmart changed JoAnns has upped the price on their bargain bins now a bargain is 5 to 9 dollars per yard about only 1 to 2 dollars off the orig price. Unfair to us that sew for charity's!

The $2.00 fabric at our local wal-mart, usually goes pretty fast. Too fast for me to get there in time...so it must be good!

Yesterday I was in line for 45 minutes while a young man from the paint department cut fabric for a colleague who was on break. One lady had 15 bolts of the $1 and $2 fabric and bought 5-8 yards of each. He did a good job for all of us, though he was slow. When the fabric associate came back, she let him finish with my order while she filed the bolts back in their places. Long wait, but satisfactory service.

A few years back, there were 3 or 4 of us customers standing in Walmart at the fabric cutting table. We had someone paged 4 or 5 times but no one ever came. I started thinking I could figure out how to use that scanner - I had noticed they didn't put codes in, just the amount of fabric and then scanned. Soooooo, I opened the door to the cabinet, took out the scanner, cut my fabric, scanned it, and then cut for everyone else. We all walked off with our fabric FINALLY!! I have purchased from them a few time since they got fabric back in. They seem to have someone assigned to the area better or maybe my timing has just been good but I haven't had to cut my own again!

I like that our Walmart got fabric department back. But the main lady in that department is very hateful and unfriendly. I refuse to look when she is there.

I have 2 WalMarts within driving distance & both are very sm. The one never has anybody within sight to cut & one time I was instructed by a note on the counter to ck. at the dressing rm. half way across the store for help. This last time with nobody in sight I finally picked up their ph. & dialed "0". I told whoever answered that I needed help. Somebody from way across the store finally arrived. Told her I was about to just walk away but I really needed that batting.

When I asked why they don't at least have a bell I was told "somebody is always taking then". Huh, who the heck wants those bells? I finally told her they may as well close up their fabric dept. if you can't get help. I'm happy you have such a friendly store.

LOL, when I first read this, I wondered if this was a new saint or something!? Our Lady of the Lake, Our Lady of the Mountain, Our Lady of the Walmart!

The Wal-mart that carries fabric in Texarkana, TX isn't carrying the $1 and $2 fabric anymore. And the normal prices are at least as high as Hancock's and Hobby Lobby. But it is another fabric source. But it is strange to see $8 and $9 fabric at Wal-nart, of course most of it is around $6.

I suspect this one won't have any after they sell what they have. The department has moved, and the 'cheap' fabric has finally moved down to 2 small shelves, where it used to be 1/4 of the fabric

I looked at some of the $2.00 fabric at Walmart. They didn't identify the fabric. A couple felt like 100% cotton, others were definitely a blend. I did buy a few bolts of Madison Avenue Designs Home Collection that were reduced to $2.00 a yard.

A couple of women came up to me at the checkout register and asked about the fabric. They didn't know the fabric department had been returned to the store last year. It won't last if people don't know it's there. At the customer service desk, I suggested they put up a fabric department sign or notice because a lot of people are going to buy fabric for halloween costumes.

I love the new fabric departments at my 2 Walmarts (both 45 mile drive for me, one East and one West) Last time I was at one of them they had several bolts of $1 - 2.50 material. I did see some high priced ones in the new fabric....$6.97 and some higher, but at least we have a selection again. I love the story about cutting your own fabric...I've been tempted to do that! lol

No fabrics at our Walmart in Huntington Beach, CA but we do have a couple of great discount fabric stores, Jenny's in Fountain Valley and M and L in Anaheim. A fabricaholics dream store.

I was told here on long island ny... fab and quilting is for old people, they want young people with money to come in.
well...i was quilting at seven and making my own cloths...and i dont think fabric is for old people.
