I've taken a couple of baby quilts to a t-shirt shop and had names embroidered on them. I don't remember how much it cost, but it wasn't too expensive. You have to take the top before it's sandwiched so they can put the stabilizing material behind where the name(s) will be.

There's still the stand-bye fabric paint. They have very fine tip bottles of it that you can use to write directly on the fabric. You have to let them sit for 24 hours without touching them and then heat set them with a warm iron (on the wrong side). I would practice writing each name on a scrap first, and make sure not to touch them until they are completely dry. This is what I use to write names on my Christmas stockings. You can find them about anywhere you can find crafting supplies, including WalMart, some Big Lots Stores, Hobby Lobby, Michaels...etc.

I buy fabric pens at walmart for my b-day quilts that get signed by who ever attends the party. They have different colors also.

I have also bought fabric pens at Wally world before. I actually just purchased two yesterday at our local quilt shop. However, you could also use a marker that was acid free and permanent. I don't know if you scrapbook, but their markers are acid free and are permanent. But if you don't, they are expensive. The fabric markers I picked up yesterday were $3.10 which is cheaper than our Wal-Mart.
