I want a super warm quilt. How do I?
 

I have a quilt top done and want to make it super warm as the hubby gets very cold, but not super expensive. I already have a Hobbs polydown coming from Connecting Threads, but am wondering about adding a second batting. Is there a batting that will play well with polydown, but still be warm? I am going to be fmq on my 6600, so can't make it overly thick and heavy. The backing will be flannel. I kinda feel like I am a rock in a hard place. Any suggestions?

I think with the poly batting and flannel back it will be plenty warm. Try to quilt it with a looser pattern so there is plenty of air space in the batting.

Wool is very warm and lightweight, and well worth the expense. It quilts beautifully.

Two layers of the poly would add warmth too.

Your 6600 is a workhorse ... you don't have to fret about thickness issues.
I am still amazed at how flawlessly it goes thru bulk and thickness ... just make sure you have the right needle.

I don't like heavy quilts because they are difficult for me to sling around, plus they are heavy to wash. Also, I think double-batting would be difficult to quilt on a domestic machine. (I have seen it done on longarms.)

I think warmth is easier to achieve with layering. My solution would be to buy a cotton blanket and double-layer the blanket under the quilt on your husband's side.

Wool batting would be the warmest batting for the quilt. Maybe save the polydown for another quilt? Connecting Threads has the Hobbs wool still on sale for $39.

The warmest quilt I have is made out of 1970's double knit. Indestuctible (maybe even bullet proof) and so warm only the coldest people can sleep under it.

I agree with you. The favorite and warmest quilt at my Mom in laws is a double knit top with poly batt and flannel sheet on the back. It is tied. Everyone fights over it on sleep overs!!

The Minkee backing is so warm, kept my granddaughter (15 yrs) warm and toasty during her Chemo. Now that she is cancer free, it keeps her heart warm!
