Would a person just make a very large size quilt in the shape of a hunk of material. Say the pattern calls for 2 yards of 44" material. So you'd quilt a piece about that size and then cut the pieces out just as if you were cutting material?

No Cande, you don't have to be here a long time to get a response. It is my bet that most here have not tried to make a quilted jacket or someone who has just hasn't seen your question yet.

You've probably already googled quilted jacket patterns and if not maybe try that if you like while you wait for someone here. I'll google it also and see if I can come up with something to help you.

Just quilt material the size you need and cut it out. Then finish the edges when you are sewing.

I make the quilted pieces of fabric in chunks big enough to cut the individual pattern pieces.

I piece a quilt "top" and then quilt it to flannel, and then I cut my pattern pieces from that. I would assume that the jacket is lined, so I wouldn't add a bottom layer to the top and flannel.

You have to be careful about batting. Anything thick will not drape properly. Silk batting is supposed to be wonderful, but it is pricey. Someone mentioned flannel, which is a great alternative; just be sure to wash and dry the flannel twice to make sure it isn't going to shrink your jacket out of shape the first time you wash it.

I haven't made a quilted jacket (don't do well with sewing patterns) but, if I were going to make one, I'd quilt pieces a little larger than the pattern pieces.

I'm so glad you asked this question. I have been wondering whether to try a quilted jacket. I didn't want to look "frumpy". I saw an Alex Anderson show years ago where she made one. Don't know if you could find it on QNNTV.com or not.

You can also use double faced pre quilted fabric. I did one time and I loved how it turned out.
