Can anyone provide information about this sewing machine that has passed down in my family? Other than the "Richmond" name there is no other identifying information on the machine. Some of the paper with it seems to indicate that was sold through the Charles William Stores. I would like to know when it was made, what company manufactured it, and what type of needles it takes (they seem to be flat shank and longer than a normal needle). The needles with the machine are stamped B Eldredge. The belt that drives the treadle is actually a spring---any special care needed for that or any associated problems with a spring rather than a leather belt? It works fine and is in very good condition, so I hope to be able to clean it up and use it! Thanks for your help.

Can't tell you much about it other than it was manufactured by National and badged with the name Richmond. That circular chrome access medallion on the front is a dead giveaway.

The spring belt may be a bit louder than leather, but it will work fine and never wear out.

You can probably manage with a standard sewing machine needle, but you'll have to "cheat" it down a little bit. The original needles are a skotch longer than the current standard needles.
