When I was dragged to my first quilting class (protesting loudly, kicking and screaming) by a neighbor, I heard people talking about their stash ( what's that ?) saying they were addicted to fabric, and I thought how silly they were. Who ever heard of anyone being addicted to fabric of all things. Well. a year and a half later, numerous rulers, 3 cutting mats, several rotary cutters, numerous books, special iron, quilt wall, boxes of thread, several gadgets, new sewing machine and special feet, and even two boxes of scraps and a little fabric (ha) I am so addicted, and so broke I don't know whether to love or hate my neighbor. Talk about eating my words !!!!

Carrie Jo 01-14-2011 06:37 AM

Sorry I cant say much..Iam choking on my own words! Oh well it keeps us out of the bars...lol

hobo2000 01-14-2011 06:38 AM

Welcome to the addiction. LOL

raptureready 01-14-2011 06:40 AM

Don't feel bad, I grew up with quilting---mom pieced by hand, dad's mom on the machine. I had an older sister that quilted, then another one started doing it. I said, "That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. Why take a perfectly good piece of fabric and cut it into tiny piece just to have to sew it back together again. Of course I remember mom using cereal box templates and scissors to cut each little piece. Then I went to a quilt show at Hancock Fabrics, found out about all the new, "make it easier" gadgets, sign up for a beginners class and the rest is history.

CarrieAnne 01-14-2011 06:42 AM

feffertim 01-14-2011 07:00 AM

luvTooQuilt 01-14-2011 07:02 AM

ROFL!!! Welcome to the club!!

QuiltforPD 01-14-2011 07:04 AM

I SO understand. I didn't sew at all about 1 and a half years ago and now it is my passion and I have a serious stash and addiction going.

SherryLea 01-14-2011 07:05 AM

We go to AR every winter for 3 mos and my husband won't let me bring my sewing machine he says I need a break from my quilting and embroidery. I go crazy wanting to quilt so I found this little quilt shop where they do the quilting for people and made friends with the owners mother and daugther
they let me stay as long as I want and watch them quilt and look at every blot of matertial and get so many Ideals that when I get home I am just dieing to get started He said he is about to give up and buy me a machine to leave here. So yes it is addictive and I love it. And have no intention to going to rehab.

amandasgramma 01-14-2011 07:07 AM

Oh, I know that feeling!!!!!! I actually got rid of boxes and boxes and boxes of craft supplies JUST to make room for my stash!!!!! NEVER thought I would do that! the only thing I'm hanging on to is my paint supplies........because, you know....I can paint on FABRIC and make a quilt --- some day!!!!! :) :) :)

dkabasketlady 01-14-2011 07:17 AM

Join the CROWD!! My DM got me "hooked" on quilting because she said I needed something to do since I'm on disability. Needless to say the rest is HISTORY!! My housework, cooking skills, and gardening(have a landscaper now) have all taken a backseat to my sewing, lol!! I'm NOT complaining and so far my DH isn't either(well not too much anyway)!!!!

Diana Lynne 01-14-2011 07:28 AM

LOL. when I was younger I hated anything to do with a needle, thread or sewing machine..Even failed home ec because of my hmmm "sewing" abilities.. Now, every chance I get I go and check out the fabrics in stores and I will pick up something..even if it is just thread..I am just starting to learn quilting but so far I am loving every minute of it

DebbyT 01-14-2011 07:47 AM

When you first start it is more of a challenge until you have all the necessary supplies and fabrics to choose from for any givin project. Lord forbid, you have to go out and buy something when you settle on a project. It doesn't end any time soon.

AliKat 01-14-2011 09:20 AM

I think of it as having my creativity encouraged by having a stash.

If nothing else, it is way cheaper than psychotherapy. Plus the end results are awesome.

JUNEC 01-14-2011 10:06 AM

Glad to hear that someone else has caught the virus - called stashaholicism - it is a very contagious but lovely disease to have.

Welcome on board - you should give your neigbor a hug

LivelyLady 01-14-2011 10:11 AM

Thank God they don't have quilters rehab.....I'd probably be committed :D

MaRanda 01-14-2011 12:07 PM

Quilters Rehab.... Never thought of that. One thing about it there are alot of people here who would qualify. We would be (could be) a great big happy family just like on here! LOL

lyndad 01-14-2011 12:12 PM

Oh my goodness, I've had this disease for years, I just added it to all my other isms

quilttiludrop 01-14-2011 12:12 PM

I have had to eat my words on more than one ocassion! The lesson learned is: be careful what you say! :-)

Izaquilter 01-14-2011 12:21 PM

I use to teach beginners quilting & loved it. But I could clearly see who would be "addicted" & who wouldn't. I even taught a girl that was colored blind to quilt. When she brought her 7 fabrics to class that is when she told me she was color blind! So we numbered her fabrics L1, L2, L3, M1, M2, M3 (light 1, light 2, light 3 & so on) She kept saying "I can't do this" & I kept telling her "can't" wasn't an acceptable word in my class! By the end of the class she was clearly hooked & even brought her final quilt top back & had made prairie points! I was so proud of her & she was even more proud of herself. And she was so addicted "thanks to me" she said! Keep the enthusiam(sp) flowing!

MadQuilter 01-14-2011 12:57 PM

The first class I signed up for was a "sampler class"
When I paid, the gal said "OK, now don't forget your stash"
I was confused because I didn't own any "stash" and must have overlooked that the title was actually "Stash Sampler Class"

So I bought a lot of stash right out of the gate. I hear ya'

Margie 01-14-2011 01:01 PM

At least your words have no calories and wont make you gain weight lol

Nanjun 01-14-2011 01:56 PM

We should all belong to quilters anonymous(?)

AnnieH 01-14-2011 11:45 PM

Such a smashing thread. Have read through nodding, smiling and chuckling. Rock on quilters.

PJisChaos 01-14-2011 11:54 PM

When we moved the 700+ miles from Illinois to Oklahoma back in 2007, I didn't think twice about leaving 2 rubbermaid buckets of scraps behind, I didn't have a clue as to what I could possibly ever do with them. O_o What on earth was I thinking??? Now I so wish I could go back in time and insist that "Yes hunny, they are important enough to bring"! LOL. Will never make that mistake again.

marthe brault-hunt 01-15-2011 03:58 AM

Always kept a place for my ''toy box'' n our camping van. This is the best way to meet people on a camping ground, people just want to know what you're doing. Inside a couple of hours you get to know all the quilters!

Not my problem. There are no bars where I live -- so I have my own stash.

hirshal 01-15-2011 05:34 AM

I was in 4H from the time I was 9 until I was 18. Every year I had to sew a piece of clothing. I hated it! Each project was harder as the years went by. I have had a sewing machine since I was a kid. A few years ago my mom showed me some fabric that she was receiving on a monthly basis through a fat quarter club of the month. I thought hmm that is interesting. Well needless to say I decided to to join one of those clubs myself and started to receive fabric. Started looking on ebay for fabric and became addicted very quickly. I love sewing now. I am so thankful that my mom made me sew all those years.

amorerm 01-15-2011 05:40 AM

lmao !!!

mimee4 01-15-2011 07:18 AM

Oh you are part of a wonderful group! I've even started to swoon over the colors of thread in Connecting Threads. I just need a couple of more blue spools - and another spool holder to match the two I have. Join the crowd!

nanacandi 01-15-2011 08:50 AM

I know the feeling. I had to get another storage system for my stash. Ive only been doing this for a few months and cant stay out of the sales at JoAnns.

gnewk 01-15-2011 09:03 AM

I hear ya!!!!

Giagia Polly 01-15-2011 10:24 AM

...and it's WAY cheaper than therapy!!

lillybeck 01-15-2011 10:30 AM

Welcome to the great addiction of creativity

leonajo 01-15-2011 10:31 AM

hate to tell this but I still smoke. one day while smoking, I started thinking about how much fabric I could buy with my cig money.... have cut my smoking in half and plan to quit my spring! everytime I want a cigarette, I think of a fat quarter lol

kwiltnutt 01-15-2011 10:49 AM

All I can say is, if you have to have an addiction..................this is one that is sanity-saving, peaceful, and I can't say that about any other addiction!

feffertim 01-15-2011 11:25 AM

or two ! Good for you, keep it up
