Yesterday I was showing my SIL a table runner I was making for my mom. While looking it over, she noticed the hand quilting I had completed and said "I don't know if you realize this or not but there's an easier way to do this. You make a tie in the center of each square." She then proceded to tell me step by step how to accomplish this technique as if it was the newest thing in quilting. When she was done.....and it was a long lesson :)...........she finished by saying "I'm so glad I could contribute something to your new hobby. If you need more help, just let me know." I was trying not to laugh or be ungrateful but I thought I was moving ahead in my quilting education/journey by attempting hand quilting or FMQ. Maybe my hand quilting wasn't quite up to par. LOL How do you all handle well meaning advice????

kathy 07-09-2010 08:36 AM

I think I would have to say " I wasn't looking for easy!"

gollytwo 07-09-2010 08:38 AM

Just say thank you and forget about it; she meant well.

cwessel47 07-09-2010 08:42 AM

" I never thought of that. Thanks!" And then do what you're doing. You can chuckle when she's gone.

QBeth 07-09-2010 08:58 AM

Actually, you got off easy! :-)

QBeth....you are absolutely right! I did get off easy :) She at least wasn't rude, just well meaning. LOL I guess my feelings were hurt that she didn't recognize the special work I had added to make this an even more special quilting project for my wonderful Mom.

Takes all types, doesn't it. Even the ones that mean no harm. At least they can provide some amusement. but, I don't blame you for being hurt!! Give credit where it's due -- hand quilting is NOT easy, is probably on the edge of extinction, and good for you for keeping it alive!

Hey, can you post a picture??

sharon b 07-09-2010 09:06 AM

Maybe mention you were trying to expand your skills  Or that you thought the tying would not lay as flat as you wanted for a table runner

bearisgray 07-09-2010 09:35 AM

If you know in your heart that she meant well, let it go.

But I'm pretty sure you just wanted her to say - "hey, that's looking good - "

Hey, can you post a picture??

Here's my project with the only thing remaining is to complete the binding. I had a lot of fun "posing" my quilt outdoors!

Love the greens and yellows in the table runner.

Your stitches are nice and even.

Nice work.

QBeth 07-09-2010 09:59 AM

It's beautiful! Love the colors. Envious of your obvious talent for hand quilting!

Lori L 07-09-2010 10:14 AM

Thank you for the compliments and encouragment. This is my very 1st attempt at handquilting a project and like everything...it's a learning experience!

The stitches look beautiful and very even. I would not have guessed it was your first. You're a natural!

Boston1954 07-09-2010 02:49 PM

Nod and smile, then do what I always have.

kim_s 07-09-2010 03:08 PM

Your table runner is beautiful. I love the colors.

That was very sweet that you listened to everything your SIL was "trying to teach you". :-P It probably made her feel good, you know?? Anyway, beautiful job on your runner!!!

MadQuilter 07-09-2010 04:33 PM

I honestly don't think she meant it as an insult. Not being a quilter, she really has no concept and she was trying to save you some time and energy NOT realizing that you revel in the "tedium."

Gal 07-09-2010 09:50 PM

Beautiful work, I love pic no2 with the dogs!

I am happy anytime I can learn something new, whether I like it or not at the moment. Plus, your standings in the family will be upgraded if you appear appreciative.

littlehud 07-10-2010 08:08 AM

That is so pretty and I think you did a great job quilting it. I hope she was just trying to be helpful.

Carol W 07-10-2010 08:56 AM

You handled it great!!!

pollyjvan9 07-10-2010 12:23 PM

Beautiful quilt and I so admire all of you that hand quilt!

CarrieAnne 07-10-2010 12:28 PM

Beautiful! Your dogs are cute too!

MomtoBostonTerriers 07-10-2010 12:41 PM

Lori,

What a gorgeous piece. Thanks for including the close up of your hand quilting so I can drool! If this is the work you do as a newbie, I want to see your efforts in another . . . 6 months. Ha!

Once I made my MIL a set of hand-quilted placemats. She said "These look store-made!" I was so insulted, but in retrospect I know she meant it as a compliment. Now that I can no longer quilt by hand, I wish I had those placemats back. . .

We have a German Shepherd,a beagle, and a red Doberman mix. I was amazed at how much our shepherd and Dobie looked like your dogs! It was like looking at a picture of an "alternate universe"! LOL!

Lori L 07-10-2010 03:14 PM

Thank you, thank you, thank you! :) I'll be seeing my dear SIL tomorrow when I present my Mom with her birthday present! I'll remember everything I've heard here and will have a huge smile on my face!
