Recently, I have been searching for patterns for babies. I want to make baby things to take to our local hospital to give to new mothers who don't have anything for their newborns. So, I made a pattern for burp cloths(4) and small bibs(4), and (2) crib size quilts. These are all simple in design, so that I can make as many as I can, in the time that I have. Also, I made a small quilt (18"sq.) to donate to their nursery. Tomorrow, I am taking them in to the hospital, will see what the nurse/s think, and hopefully come back home and make some more!!!

Whooops, I posted this in the wrong place...sorry!

That is awsome. Good luck to you. I called out NICU to offer my services and they never called me back.

I'm going to pay them a visit. It's a small hospital, compared to most...

Although I am RN Hospice director now (and LOVE it), I work at the hospital to fill in now and then. And especially when there is a new baby. The newborn gets his own nurse for the first hour or two. And that's a pretty fun job! Anyway, we have organizations that bring the huge size of ziploc (about twice the size of a gallon size) with a blanket from flannel, matching burp cloth, lotion, shampoo for every new mom. Our hospital is small, about 85-100 births a year at most, but I know that the new moms really appreciate it.
Sometimes a womans group bring in a dozen blankets or quilts to give to moms who need them, and you should see the look on the new mom's face! It's a great service to make them, so I congratulate anyone who does it. |
Oh yes, and folks bring in little hats too. That is the BEST! I guess you have all seen those round looms that you can make them with, pretty quick, but we love to dress up those babies with a colorful hat!

Well, yesterday, made it to the hospital, with the homemade things. What a wonderful welcome! They were all out of the larger size baby quilts, so they welcomed the two that I had brought in.They loved the burp cloths and bibs, so I will be making more and bringing them in.They have plenty of knitted/crocheted hats and booties, so I can concentrate on making sewn things. It seems the one doing this sort of thing before me is older and finds she can't do this anymore, (divine intervention). You would be sadly surprised to find out how many new mothers don't have the means to get things for their new baby... It does my heart good to know that the things I make will make a difference!

what a wonderful idea, Sarasewing, about the larger sized bags. When speaking with them yesterday, they told me that the hospital delivers about 420 babies each year and if one stops and thinks about it, a great number of these mothers have nothing for their newborns! My mother (God rest her soul) always told me "You have a God-given talent, why don't you use it?" Okay, Mom, I'm trying.... Doing this gives me a warm and tingly feeling inside. Wahoooo!

How wonderful of you! You're happy, moms are happy, babies are happy. Keep sewing girl! It obviously does a heart good!

Bless you!!

I am sooo excited for you, too!
No one could ever pay you $$ for the satisfaction you get in the doing, but to KNOW that you have a place to send your largesse ... that is a BIG blessing! <wave> And, yes ... Ziplock DOES make a TWO GALLON bag ... they are GRAND! ;-) |
