I'm such a proud mom!

My 17 year old daughter came to me this evening and said, "Mom, will you teach me to make a quilt?"

Like I could say no! So she's sitting beside me at the sewing machine that her great, great, grandma used, and is putting together 4 log cabin squares to make a wall hanging with. She cut the strips herself and after I showed her once how to put the squares together, she's doing it herself :) So proud!!

grannie cheechee 10-22-2012 04:27 PM

Congrats. You must have done something right!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maggie_Sue 10-22-2012 05:02 PM

Oh how fun! Anxious to see her walhanging!

quiltingcandy 10-22-2012 05:07 PM

That is so nice! My daughters are not interested in making quilts at all. They like the results but not the process.

suebee 10-22-2012 05:14 PM

You ARE blessed. I never had anyone (that I knew) in my family that quilted, nor do I forsee new DIL taking to quilting. I envy all of you that come from long line of quilters or have someone to quilt with.

Toni C 10-22-2012 05:49 PM

Yes I bet you are the proudest Mom on the block. I'm just like Suebee. So Happy for you!

Pat625 10-22-2012 05:51 PM

So happy for you!! Have only one out of 7 daughters interested!! Guess who gets my stash and her Grandmother's first sewing machine when I die!!

Tartan 10-22-2012 07:14 PM

Congratulations another quilter is born!!!

Silver Needle 10-22-2012 07:51 PM

It's always thrilling to hear about the tradition of quilting being passed on to the next generation.

spokanequilter 10-22-2012 08:26 PM

Hooray!!! Another member of the Sisterhood of Quilters!! Enjoy sharing your love of quilting with her...

LoisM 10-22-2012 08:32 PM

That's FANTASTIC!! Bless her dear little heart. I hope she catches the quilting bug!

MamaInRed 10-22-2012 08:48 PM

Must be something in the air, my seventeen year old daughter asked me the same thing this week.
So I run right out & bought her a machine of her own, so we can sew together as she learns.
It's so great when our kids share our love of fabric's & quilting.

Pickles 10-22-2012 09:15 PM

I'm so happy for you and her hope she ends up loving it and carrys it on to her daughter some day :}

ShabbyTabby 10-22-2012 10:18 PM

I am blessed. Both my daughter and my granddaughter are quilters. Granddaughter is almost 21 and she has been sewing for about 7 years now. She belongs to a Renniasance Guild and made all of her own fancy gowns this past year. She has 4 quilts under her belt. Daughter is doing a quilt for fundraiser for SPCA and 2 for friends for gifts. You should see our dining room!!! A whirlwind of fabrics.

batikmystique 10-23-2012 06:50 AM

How wonderful! And, to be using a machine that has been passed down through the generations. My daughter said she just wouldn't have the patience to do quilting. I'm a bit disappointed for myself, but so happy for you!! What a great way to strengthen your mother/daughter bond. I'm still hoping my daughter will want to try someday.

kentuckyred 10-23-2012 07:00 AM

She finished the top and basted the layers together last night and it looks wonderful! I'll post pictures this evening. She's a little frusterated with the hand stitching but I told her she needed to at least try it and if she really hates it I'll show her how to do it on the machine. :D It was very nice sitting side by side with her as she worked and I worked on my kitty place mats- quilted matts go on the back of the sofa for the cats to sleep on. I'm really proud of her.

nygal 10-23-2012 10:32 AM

How wonderful. A new quilter among us.

rj.neihart 10-24-2012 04:38 AM

I would be proud too! Unfortunately, the love of quilting wasn't passed down to my daughter. She does, however, come to me when she needs something mended. hah!

cherrio 10-24-2012 04:53 AM

I feel your pain . . . 3 daughters.Nicole is a a cleaning fanatic. Kiersten is a fantastic, adventourous (sp) cook who gave me 2 dgs's and the 19 yr old, Jordyn, is- well, 19. and helpfull. and I hear she's a great girlfriend! yea. Jordyn at least made a baby quilt for a friend. well, MOST of a baby quilt. But says she didn't like sewing and has no plans of doing anything more than helping me. it's a start.

Caswews 10-24-2012 05:07 AM

woohooo another quilter has arisen!! Even if she only does it once-she will learn a lesson of a lifetime as far as I am concerned.

chaskaquilter 10-24-2012 05:08 AM

My 9 year old granddaughter stayed with me this past week end. She sat down at the sewing machine for the first time. I had some I spy 5" squares left over from another project, and she sewed those together according to her design. It is bright, I will say that. Two borders are plain green and two are purple with little hearts on it. I think it is the most beautiful quilt I have ever seen, lol. I am going to finish sewing the binding on for her and then sending it to her. We had so much fun.

Suzbo 10-24-2012 05:29 AM

feel so happy for you! my stepdaughter has no desire to do crafts of any kind and my son's girlfriend is not talented with fabrics at all either (she and her mom can't even mark a hem for me - 3 pins and 3 different lengths). I will admit that I don't know if sharing would be my thing either lol

Amythyst02 10-24-2012 05:30 AM

That is so wonderful. My daughter runs the other way, at the thought of sewing anything!

Cookie64 10-24-2012 05:41 AM

Enjoy sharing your love of quilting with her... I have 4 granddaughters and I thought them to sew in hopes at least one of them would get to quilting. They all have sewing machines. My youngest one just moved back to Ca. 3 1/2 hours drive from me so what we will be doing when she comes to visit. Oh yea!!

lillybeck 10-24-2012 05:42 AM

You should be. None of my girls were ever interested in sewing until now that they are parents themselves,

I'm soooo jealous. Both of my daughters made a few simple 9-patch blocks when they were in their teens and that is a far as it got. One of my daughters tried hand quilting, but didn't stick with it long enough to do very well, but I'll give her credit for trying. The heritage of piecing quilts and hand quilting is stopping with my generation. I do have one niece who is interested. Ironically, her mother is the only one of the four sisters that doesn't do quilting, so guess it's skipping a generation with that sister. Oh, yes, another sister's son has learned to hand quilt and does quite well. Now that he is almost 15, I'm not sure it's too "manly" to do right now, but who knows, he may come back to it.

donewith13 10-24-2012 06:33 AM

That is so sweet of her. I to have a daughter, but she like the out side. But my grand daughter is differt she like to work with me in my craft room. Love it.

fayeberry 10-24-2012 06:37 AM

That is so neat. My daughter is not interested....

sewsew busy 10-24-2012 06:43 AM

Be sure to post pictures when she is finished. We would love to see it.

Delta 10-24-2012 06:45 AM

YEAH show up pics when she is done.

sunnymom 10-24-2012 06:52 AM

I bet you are proud! I tried for years to get my now 21 year old daughter, who moved back in to go to back to college, to quilt. Last week she came up to me and said she wanted me to help her make a quilt for her friend's baby shower. Needless to say, I was a proud Mom too! We both must have had an influence on our daughters when we didn't know it! Awesome! :)

Pam Riggs 10-24-2012 06:57 AM

Congratulations! Take pictures along the way so you can have them to look back on. I see you are in Western KY - Bowling Green area?? I am in South Central KY - Elizabethtown/Hodgenville area.

MimiBug123 10-24-2012 07:59 AM

I'm so happy for you and your DD. She will have a lifetime of joy and skill from what she is learning from you. My DD is not at all interested in quilting or sewing. Her DD is 15, and doesn't have time for such. Maybe one day! I suppose my soon to be ex- DIL will get my stash, as well as my herd of machines, vintage and otherwise!

cowgirlquilter 10-24-2012 08:43 AM

Smiling in happiness for you......

sewingsuz 10-24-2012 08:45 AM

That is so great. I have three daughters and they do not sew. They are missing the good stuff.

kentuckyred 10-24-2012 09:20 AM

Hi Pam- I'm actually even further west than Bowling Green, I'm on the Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky border where the rivers merge :)

You are so lucky! We've purchased sewing machines for granddaughters but they aren't too enterested and neither is daughter but DDIL has some but she has so many irons in the fire with 2 little ones, her job and all her other projects lol

red-warrior 10-24-2012 12:10 PM

Congrats! The beginning of lots of fun together quilting!

QuiltingKrazy 10-24-2012 12:36 PM

How Lucky you are! I was excited when my daughter made a few small "panel" blankets when she was about 14. I thought for sure she would get the sewing bug. oh well it was nice sharing my love with her even if for a short time.
Today she LOVES to choose fabrics for me to sew! HA!
