I m going to town tomorrow and i m starting a quilt which i am aiming the squares(doing a 9 patch and railway) to be 6,5 i think sooo, is that right for 9 patch and railway?
anyway i ned u to help me pick one kind of ruler i can use to both of those until i can afford more rulers and order from ebay as that is sooo much cheaper, here in norway i ll prob end up using 25 to 30 dollars on one 6 by 12 or 24 ruler. also i have an older janome( for now and umtil it dies but i really have a singer which is in repairs and dunno if i am getting it back) but if u could write down and show me pictures of the feet which is the most important ones i ll be really greatful. i know things are different from brand to brand etc but atleast i have something to go after kinda. thanks girls  |
6 inch x 24 inch. My favourite make is Omnigrid, comes with both black and yellow markings, so is easy to see on almost every fabric. It's wide enough to cut fabric when it is only folded once, whereas a 12 inch ruler would need the fabric to be folded twice.

My favorite "little" ruler is the Omnigrid 4 x 8 inch ruler with 1/8 inch markings. Do you work in metric or inches? There is another one out that is 8 1/2 x 24 1/2 inches by Creative Grids (TM) - that's supposed to be Non-Slip. It does have more slip resistance than my other rulers. The only thing about it is, I need to really pay attention to the lines/markings because it's different than the other ones I have. |
6 1/2 by 24. You can do about any cutting with that size.
|
I agree with everyone else, go with the 6 x 24.

ditto 6 x 24
the following sewing feet are used on a daily basis 1/4 foot with guide for general piecing http://cgi.ebay.com/Brand-New-1-4-in...rkparms=65%3A1|66%3A4|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A20 0 clear open toe foot for half squares, applique, stitch in the ditch, etc http://cgi.ebay.com/Brother-Baby-Loc...rkparms=65%3A1|66%3A4|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A20 0 clear darning foot for free motion quilting and stitch in the ditch http://cgi.ebay.com/Brother-Clear-Qu...rkparms=65%3A1|66%3A4|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A20 0 i own a walking foot but in 8 years i used it once. |
Definately a 6x24". You should be able to get one in your price range.
I also have a 6x12" for smaller stuff, but I think if I'd bought the 6x24 first I wouldn't have bought the other. |
We all seem to agree on the 6x24. It's a good all round ruler.
|
I agree with the 6X24 ruler and the feet listed above
|
I only have 2 rulers..one is the 6 x 24in that many people have already mentioned. i also have a 6 x 6in. These are the two rulers i first bought when I started quilting a couple of years ago and find them very useful and so far havent needed another ruler...I have been thinking about getting a bigger square one maybe a 12 x 12 but will need to look into that one before spending my money as things are very expensive over here as well.
The foot I seem to use the most is the 1/4 in foot with the guide and will probably use the darning foot once I start stippling and free machine quilting more ( have to work up the courage ) I also have a walking foot which i also use regularly.. have fun shopping... |
I only have one rular (so far) and it is the 6" x 24"
If you have the option of getting the "frosted" non-slip rular - GET IT! It will make cutting straight strips of fabric so much easier! Jan |
6 X 24
For a second ruler, I would get a 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" then there are the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th.... |
I agree with Cathe. A 6 X 24 and then a 12 1/2 by 12 1/2. I have some other smaller ones but these are the 2 that I use most often.

I have a 12 1/2" square ruler with the 6 1/2" cut out in the middle for squaring up blocks

I agree with others. 6 X 24 for cutting strips and 12 1/2 x 12 1/2 for squaring. As for feet, I like my 1/4 for piecing, open toe for general sewing, darning foot for free motion, and the walking foot for stabilizing the quilt and quilting grid lines.
|
I have to absolutly agree on the ruler. In fact the 6x24 is all I used for years. As far as a foot is concerned, I us my 1/4 in. about 99% of the time. :!: :!: :!:

My favorite is the Fiskars 6 1/2 x 24 Combo ruler/cutter. Got mine at WalMart for $32.99
|
If your finished block will measure 6 1/2 inches. I would buy a 6 1/2 inche square ruler. A 6 X 12 or a 6 / 24 are hard to control when cutting small pieces of a block. Donna

try to buy the biggest and the bestest that yoyr money can bur. I find that the 6x24 is very useful
|
6 1/2" x 24" and 12 1/2" square
Since I bought my 6 1/2 x 24 ruler, I seldom use my 6 x 24. My favorite brand is Creative Grid and second favorite is Omnigrip. |
