i have one of my GMs 1920's quilt. i didnt know that the roof over my closet had a leak until i moved out of the apartment. when i checked the quilts out the one on top had gotten wet. the problem is that because it is so old the red and green ran. it is all applicaid with a pattern i have never seen before or since it won a prize at a fair and it is simply awesome. do any of you think i might be able to get the color that ran out of the white muslin. it is all hand quilted, or should i try and find someone who might be able to help me fix it.

Oh I so hope that you will be able to get the color that ran out of the white muslin.

Is it stable enough to wash? They make a product called color catchers. They go in the washer. I don't think I would be brave enough to machine wash it. You might try filling up your bathtub and soaking it. But you have to be careful to not wring it. Just gently smash the water out then wrap it in towels to soak up the excess. I would suggest letting it air dry out in the yard on top of an old sheet...good luck...

If the colors ran by getting wet in the closet, won't they run when you get it wet, again? Or will the color catchers keep that from happening? I have never used them. I hope you can fix it.

If you can wash it, the color catchers will work. I don't know it they will work if you can't get most of the water out. I think it will bleed again.

Get in touch with your local quilting guild. They may know a careful and reliable dry cleaner in your area. If the colors ran, washing will make the rest of them run. I'm heartbroken for you, Good luck.
