So first, my question is - is it possible to make your own PP pattern and/or how hard would it be to do?

And my second is if this project I want to do is impossible. I'm 99% sure there's no pattern out there for the PP project I want to do.

If you've seen the LOTR movies, you'll know what this is, but I want to make a PP quilt of the city of Minas Tirith. :shock:

It could be incredibly detailed - could you piece the city in larger pieces and then use thread to do a lot of the detail work in the walls and turrets?

Where there's a will, there's a way! Are you planning a bed quilt or a wallhanging? Fusing might be the way to go rather than paper piecing.

I was thinking wallhanging. Something that wouldn't really get washed much, etc.

Definitely like the suggestion of using threadpainting for a lot of the detail.

This is just a brainstorm that I came up with...may work, may not. I would open the picture with my computer's photo editing program and enlarge it as much as possible so that you can see the individual digital megapixels (like little squares of color). Print it out even if you have to do it in sections and then use these printouts as your foundation for paper piecing, matching small pieces of fabric to the colors of the enlarged photo. Then use threadpainting or various quilting patterns to enhance the elements of the quilt. There actually is a book that describes the process of converting digital photos to finished quilts-- Secrets of Digital Quilting--From Camera to Quilt: 8 Projects; 25 Techniques; Embellish with Paints, Inks & More [Paperback] by Lura Schwarz Smith and Kerby C. Smith. I have not read it but this may help explain the process better than I can.

Since it would be fairly intricate if you paper piece it the seams could get pretty bulky. I'd fuse it.

I think it will be a massive undertaking, and very challenging. I do wish you luck and I can't wait to see what you come up with. And I can't wait to see it finished. I might cut the picture up into sections and print each section on fabric. You can sew it together or use a fusible on the edges. Then you can thread paint some of it to bring out the features. So many options. PP would work but be very time consuming I would think.
