Interfacing - ugh!
 

I am working on a project that has taken on a life of its own.... I have used 40+ yards of pellon fusible interfacing ... with no problem. It fused well and all went as planned My problem is that the last 5 yards or so just is not fusing. I don't know if I got a hold of a bad bolt or what the problem is... my question is can I just use this as is? I have spots that are fused and other spots that are not. If I sew this in my quilt (back of a T shirt) will that work? I am frustrated and not sure I have the patience to iron again. what do you think?

Were the t-shirts washed? Did you use a fabric softener with the t-shirts? That might be the cause of the problem.

Are you going to be quilting through the t-shirt pieces or tying? The reason to fuse is for stability, so it is best fused completely so I would try to fuse it again. If you are going to do a fair amount of quilting you might get away with spray basting it instead.

well, honestly I don't know about the fabric softener. I got the shirts from my sister (my nephew's) just like I go all of the other shirts from her. I would think that they all would have been washed the same (whether with fabric softener or without) I don't know how much quilting I am going to do just yet - but some of these have logos so I won't be quilting too terribly much. So maybe I need to wash them again myself - leave out the fabric softener, so I can eliminate that from the equation. Thanks

When I have issues with fusible sticking I turn to my spray basting to make it stick. As stated earlier, using fabric softener and dryer sheets can inhibit the interfacing from sticking.

I only use the fusible to stabilize while sewing the t-shirts together. There is an on line t-shirt quilt maker that doesn't use fusible at all. I think you are fine with it only fusing in places. As long as your edges aren't all stretchy and curling up you should be ok. Go for it.

Thank you for your replies. I re-ironed them and put them through the washer again...and that time over half of them worked..I still have 2 pieces that are loose and 1 piece that just fell off completely. Since they have been rinsed I am going to iron again... if they stick good if not I think I am going to try the spray basing.. I never have tried that.. I like trying new things. Happy 4th of July!!
