invisible thread
 

I would like to try quilting with invisible thread but have never used it before. I have a Nolting funquilter and was wondering if there are any secrets for quilting with this thread. Any tension adjustments - can you use regular thread for the bobbin? Thanks in advance for the info

I use YLI Wonder Invisible with my Viking Rose & have never had difficulty. I have used "bobbin" thread for the bobbin instead of the Invisible.

I have used the monofilament in the top stitch of my regular sewing machine and regular thread (to match the backing) in the bobbin. I have to make sure that the thread winds upward - not sideways. You may want to put a net over the spool to keep it from unraveling. For the quilting machines I have heard mention that the tension needs to be decrease just a bit. On the TinLizzie for example, the gal wound the thread through only 2 of the loops. All you can do is try. Good luck.

Secrets that I know...I only use it as my top thread and use a finer thread...such as Aurafil in the bobbin. I do have a friend who has used it both top and bottom and and said she was told to only fill bobbin about 3/4 full and wind it slowly.
I don't sew too fast with the invisible thread...use YLI brand, but am wanting to try the newer invisible polyester thread now available. For me, it works best to have the thread upright, not horizontal when feeding onto the machine. You will need to decrease the top thread when sewing with the invisible thread. Start by lowering it a bit, and sewing a sample, then another bit until the tension is what you are wanting-no bobbin thread showing on the top of quilt.

not all invisible threads are created equal- some stretch & break easily- if using a high-speed machine- some are (pokey) like fishing line-
some melt if touched with an iron- or become brittle and break if placed in a hot dryer.
so choose a good quality- recommended one (monofilament- not nylon) bobbin thread to match your background & slow down - some are easier to work with than others- if you order your invisible thread read the reviews & make sure you are getting what you want- if purchasing locally - from the lqs- ask what they recommend & why-

I would rather quilt with a finer thread like Superior Threads "Bottom Line" than use the monofilament.

My sewing machine prefers invisible mono thread when quilting versus regular thread. Crazy!
