I've gotten myself in a pickle. Hellllp!
I've made two identical tops to make a reversible quilt. I did the Warm Wishes with Violins on one side and Baseball on the other, my GS's favorite things. I had to do this because I couldn't get the coordinating fabrics to match for both focus fabrics. Now, here's the rub, I have the same problem with coordinating thread for quilting it. DUH! Didn't think about that 'til it's time to quilt it for Christmas.
Can I use smoke aurifil invisible thread in top and bottom? I'm thinking not. Need suggestions and a brain implant if you have one to spare. :) I think I've used my last brain cell on this silly thing. TIA |
Sure you can, I've done it! I've also used a different color in the bobbin. You might have a little fixing to do at the end (tying things off, etc.) but it is definitely doable.

Can you find a neutral thread to use? Maybe use one color on top and another in the bobbin. I wouldn't use invisible thread because it can be picky sorta like the thread used in the neck of shirts that irritate you when you wear the shirt. Good luck in your search.

I often use different colors in the top and bobbin. You have to be a little more careful with the tension, but often a washing when done resolves any issues of one color poking thru the opposite sides. Can you post a picture? Maybe we can come up with a color that would work for both if you don't want to use 2 colors.

I would echo what Susie said. how about a nice tan or med to light grey? I have many times spun my wheels to try to pick out a thread color...only to realize it could not be seen anyway! I am not very matchy matchy with my colors either. I found if I matched colors to a fabric, then on THAT fabric you cannot see it, and on the other fabrics it stands out. I have a good tan (Permacore Mother Goose) , a lighter grey (gray opal or pearl opal...something opal! also Permacore) and Omni spearmint (a nice soft green). Those are my go to colors.

Would love to see a photo - I've used invisible thread for a quilt that is intended as a bed topper, but if your quilt is intended to be loved and used and cuddled with, I wouldn't use it.

Tks a lot for your excellent advice. I can't find a neutral thread that will work with both of the tops. I've decided not to use the invisible thread because I know my DIL will dry the quilt in a hot dryer and that just wouldn't work. Tks again.

I have used it in both top and bottom with ok results. A lot of people find invisible thread in the bobbin really finicky and have a hard time with it. I mean, I don't think I have ever been able to achieve perfect tension that way - but - you can't see the stitches that well anyhow!! As long as you're not getting loose weak stitches it's fine. :)
What about a taupe or a cream thread? You can usually get away with an offwite or tan thread on almost ANY project. I would post some pictures so we can see what you're working with! ;) |

Just saw this - if you use Polyester invisible thread you can toss it in the dryer - no worries! ;) |
