Janome 49360 from HSN
 

My DH bought me the Janome 49360 from HSN for my birthday after researching it from a post here on the Board. I've had it for several weeks, and am happy to report it's a great little machine. Weighs only 12.5 lbs so is perfect to take to quilting classes. This machine is the same model as the Janome 3160, see - http://content.janome.com/index.cfm/...ilting/3160QDC

It has an automatic needle threader, automatic thread cutter, blanket stitch for appliqué, needle up/down, and many additional feet. It is truly a little work horse.

My other machines are the Bernina 730 and Pfaff 7510. Frankly, I am a little disappointed when comparing the Bernina to the Janome. My Bernina does not like Aurifil thread and unthreads itself constantly. It also leaves a clump of bobbin thread when beginning a new sew. The (quite less expensive) Janome does none of these things. The only concern I have is the tension seems to be a bit tight. Might require an adjustment at the Janome dealer.

I am happy to report this little machine is definitely a keeper. Love Janome! GREAT value for the price.

I love my Janomes, I have 4 of their $100 models I teach with and then my 6600--I will say tho that my 6600 leaves those thread nests at the beginning almost every time.

Wow, good to know. I have a Janome Memory Craft 9000, which does embroidery and I love her dearly, but glad to hear there is a lighter, cheaper version for classes and stuff. Will suggest it when folks ask me about a good starter machine for kids. Thank you for posting.

A guild member ordered one and she loves it. It sews very quietly. She uses 70wt bobbin thread and 50 wt 2 ply top thread with a size 80 needle for piecing. I always ask about thread/needle when someone gets a new machine and has no complaints.

Congratulations on your purchase. check out the tension information at Superior Threads, unless you have a drop in bobbin you should be able to adjust that. On your Bernina why not check with your dealer - I have a 730 and use aurifil along with every other thread with no problem. On the nesting - are you holding your threads when you start to sew? the unthreading is normally just a small adjustment. I have other machines also (Pfaff / Brother - no Janome yet) but I love my 730

Any machine can make a thread nest when starting. If you find that yur machine produces these, a simple fix is to hold onto your threads when you start and it won't happen. You only need to hold for a couple of stitches when starting a seam. :-)
