So excited. I am getting a Janome MC4900QC (joint birthday and Christmas present). What I would like to know before I invest in additional expenditure is, does the Convertible Free Motion Quilting Foot Set and special bobbin case really make a difference? Using the standard accessories that came with it, I gave up on free motion work using my Janome 6125QC, it was just too difficult to get the stitches even. I would love to hear if anyone else with my stitch co-ordination problem has found this attachment an asset or not.

i don't know about that convertible foot set your speaking of but i did buy the bobbin case. the tension on that bobbin case is set at the factory just for free motion quilting. i never mess with the tension on any bobbin case so i believe the special bobbin case just for free motion quilting is an absolute must. i could not afford to have all my quilts done by a long armer so i decided if i was to keep on quilting i had to try that special bobbin case and sure enough that solved my problem as i now free motion all my quilts. they may not meet the standard of a long armer but looks pretty good to me. here's a close up of one i just finished.

I have a 6600 and bought the bobbin case with the new fmq foot. It makes a huge difference to free motion and I am very pleased with it, I prefer quilting with the finer threads. It is very smooth and quieter.

The only thing I've found though is free motion with 40/3 threads or metallic is better with the original bobbin & fmq foot (on my machine) - with the new one I was getting breaking threads using the thicker threads.

a fm bobbin case? what? I have a janome 9500, that I am doing free motion on w the fm gloves, doing pretty good on my second project. How much are these little gizmo's approx? Should I try to get one? where?

WOW, your FM is great. I have an older mode Janome, and have not even been to a dealer for ever so long. I am fearful about going lest I find something I cannot live without!

As I understand it the FM bobbin is set at a lower tension or something. You can tell how non-technical I am. In UK it is about £25 (approx $40) but I bet it will be a lot less in US. The whole set will set me back £60 so will get the bobbin and see how it works with the foot that comes with my 4900. I love hand quilting, but it is taking its toll on my wrists and finger tips . Also it takes forever, and I haven't got forever. By the way my new machine arrived this morning, so I am now going to blitz the housework before I open it, or nothing will ever get done.
