I had never heard of the Jelly Roll until coming to this forum. Also have not seen them other than pictures. I was thinking of making my own but have some ?s. Approx. how long are the strips and how wide? How many in a roll and how many rolls too make a quilt? Sorry I sound so stupid. How else does one learn?

amma 07-11-2010 04:16 PM

They are 2 1/2" wide and they are cut from selvedge to selvedge.
You sure can cut your own :D I am cutting some to go with a jelly roll that I bought :D:D:D

Marge, same here and now I am finding out many, many things I never knew :D
You can make your own. The Moda line makes them. They are the width of the fabric (usually 45 in) and you cut them in 2 inch strips.
I was thinking of making some too. I've bought them and they are so much fun to work with. You can make as many as you wish. I think Moda's are 40 strips- something like that. Joann's also has them but I haven't bought any.

Oops, that's right-2 1/2inches- sorry!

You will have fun with your stripes. I thought about cutting all my stash into 2 1/2in stripes. Luckily I haven't had time. Lol

Thanks all of you. That's exactly what I wanted to know. I'm running out of storage and thought it would help to downsize. Then I can buy some more, huh. LOL

I like the store bought ones because it is all from a collection, so they all go togther And there are several books out there that feature quilts made from just jelly rolls, layer cakes (10 inch squares) and other pre cut fabrics. That way you take the guess woek out of finding coordinating fabrics,

Yes, the nice thing about jellyrolls is they are all different but all blend.

nwm50 07-11-2010 05:07 PM

some jelly rolls are 20 to a roll of 1 1/2"
Be sure before you buy which ones you are getting.Does anybody have patterns to share using these rolls?

SuzanneTx 07-11-2010 05:16 PM

You can get honey buns which are smaller roll and the jelly rolls.

I bought a book for jelly rolls but you can find free patterns on www.modabakeshop.com. Lots of projects there.

What's the difference between Jelly Rolls and Noodles? I had never bought either until yesterday I bought three of what I thought were Jelly Rolls but when I got home they said Noodles on them. Hancocks had them for half price. They told me that Hancocks didn't appreciate them anymore and they needed to come home with me. How could I refuse?

I think the term Jelly Rolls might be a copyrighted thing for Moda.

Pam, I think you're right. That bake shop website is so much fun!!! I refuse to buy any more books for awhile. I'm getting free patterns online. I had to thin my books b/c it was getting ridiculous. I'd rather spend the money on fabric :D:D

I started back into quilting with a batik jelly roll and kept on going/ My LQS cuts their own & they are well matched. A treat. I made the jelly roll tutorial. It was very easy & very satisfying.

I think that the 1-1/2 strip rolls are called honey buns. Right?

I got noodles from Hancock fabrics too. They are identical to my jelly rolls. Just a different name I guess.

nursie76....i believe that you are right.

raptureready 07-12-2010 04:11 AM

Jelly Rolls, Honey Buns, Noodles, these names are confusing. What I bought was 3 big wads (rolls) of fabric and I'm going to leave it at that. LOL
Dotty, I'm going to look up your tute. Thanks for mentioning it.
