How big is the finished size. Im calculating somewhere about 80" x 45".
Is this correct? I have a hoffman bali roll ive been dying to use.
Probably wont use it for awhile but was wondering what the complete size is

I'm confused also. It looks fun and easy - but I want to us up all my 2 1/2" scraps. How do I calculate how long that first scrapy strip needs to be? I have a double bed and want to cover the top.

Cindyb, I was told to cut 18" from the length of the first strip (assuming you are using precuts, then they are aprox 44" wide) and then sew all the 44" strips to then end of that first strip. Since you are doing scraps, it doesn't really matter. You just don't want every seam to end up at the same exact point. Once you have sewn them all end to end, you pick up the two ends and start sewing them together, so the seams would line up if you had not offset them in some way. I loved the finished piece, but it is sort of boring to do.

I did one of these. It was fun. Sew 40 strips end to end. Cut off 18 inches at one end, bring the ends together and sew down the long strip, 1/4 inch seam. When you get to the bottom, cut off the end, then bring the ends together and sew another 1/4 inch seam down the length of the long strip. Keep doing that. It's fun and it's fun to see what your top looks like at the end.

Lynnie: Everything I could find on the web says it's 48 X 64. Hope this helps.

The traditional jelly roll quilt (40 2.5" strips) is about 50x64. You can use more strips to make it larger. The funny/difficult thing about this quilt is that the final dimensions are controlled by the length of the first (very long) strip. You are always cutting the original strip in half, then half again, etc. and when you stop - that's the width of your quilt. The length may not be what you want, or what you expected, unless you do some calculations in the beginning.

I want to do one too but out of my own strips so I can make the colors I want. It sounds very interesting. Thanks for the discussion and the links to the other one.

I made 10 of these in different colors. I bought 1/2 yard of 7 fabrics. 1 yard for first border, and 1 1/2 for second border. I was very happy with the results.
