I just bought some muslin from JoAnn's and it seems so thin, I got the 108"wide to use in a double wedding ring quilt but now that I have it I dont like it because it seems so see through. Would washing help it thicken up. I'm actually thinking of buying some white on white and using the muslin for something else down the road.
What do you guys suggest?
Also what do you think about Hobby Lobby quilt fabric?

As long as you would use a white batting, Warm & White, I don't see that there would be problem. It just depends on how you feel about the fabric itself. If you used it would you like the quilt less? :D

if you wash in hottest water and dry hot, it will shrink in and become somewhat thicker. but it will also become shorter. make sure you'll have enough length.

I don't like that thin muslin. I'm always afraid it will wear faster than the rest of the fabrics. I like kona cotton.

I'm really picky about the whites that I buy, specifically for the reason you noted - many are so sheer. One of the best off-whites that I've found that I like was at Wal-Mart is 54" drapery lining. It's got a nice feel to it and is not a blinding white like many of the whites are. So it has a more vintage look to it. Also, the Kona whites are nice, I have some of those and really like them.

If you are talking about the front of the quilt, I would say from experience to spend the extra on the Kona cotton. I have one I did with muslin and its really flimsy compared to the printed fabric. Even after washing in hot and drying on hot. You can always tea dye the white if its too bright for what you want.

i agree regarding the kona white. be aware that kona makes 2 'whites' and one is really a 'winter white'. one is blinding white and one is softer. i don't remember which name goes with which color.

winter white is not pure white. it's off-white.

correct. they make that and a blinding white, whose name i don't recall.

edit edit: this is a review i found of kona. i posted once that there was a difference in quality. i think kona manufactures down to meet specs for joann.

I made the mistake of buying this fabric at JoAnn instead of my local quilt shop- I won't make the mistake again! This is NOT the same Kona you get from Kaufman- not now, not ever! The drape is fine, until it is washed and used a few times, then it is as cheap and flimsy feeling as much cheaper fabric- and fades, too. The stores will never have the amazing color selection, because it is not the same fabric- just the same price! Don't be fooled!

this will show all the whites that kona produces. there is quite a range. i was thinking of snow as one of the whites. the other is called solid white. i bought one mini-bolt (6 yds) of each on sale not long ago.

the double wedding ring is so labor intensive that I would buy the best fabric I could afford...
