just double checking: making HST
 

The quilt pattern calls for taking a 6 7/8 inch square and cutting it diagonally. then pair it up with the other color 6 7/8 inch square and cut diagonally. Then sew together to make a square. Does it come out exactly the same if I put the two squares together, draw a line diagonally down the center and sew 1/4 inch away from the line on both sides. Then, cut down the pencil line? Expensive fabric. Just want to make sure I am correct before I sew and cut.

Yup. And a lot easier too.you could also cut them 7 in, sew on each side of you line, press, then trim to 61/2 if you want

it is always easier-more precise to stitch while they are squares instead of working with the bias edges- i would cut my squares 7", draw diagonal line- stitch on each side of line, cut on line press & square up to 6 1/2"

I came here to offer the exact advice already offered. Cut the squares larger, sew, cut apart then square to the right size. It makes for much less room for error.

Ditto.....I just made a bunch of HST and used the exact method you want to do (make diagonal line, stitch both sides, cut middle) and they all came out great. I would cut them larger and trim to size unless you cut and sew exact....LOL. I know that sure isn't me.

I bought just enough fabric and I cut the squares already. I just didn't want to cut them into triangles and then make the HST. I prefer the other method. I will do a very scant 1/4 inch from the edge of the pencil line. I am using these for the batik block exchange and need to make sure my blocks measure perfectly. Thanks for the double check... Thinking back, I probably should have cut to 7 inch and then trimmed. It would have made cutting the squares a lot faster and easier and would have been better in case of mistakes

I know you have the squares already cut ... so for another time ...
And even easier still ...
instead of cutting your squares first ... use the grid method and do all the sewing first, then cut apart.

i have some sqaures sewn together like that i was going to make pinwheels out of them so if they started out as 5 in charm squares should i trim them to 4 1/2 in i didnt have a pattern for this was just playing around so theyre still sitting there waiting in my huge pile of ufo's which im hoping to make a little smaller this year. thats my goal anyway lol.

Trim them to whatever size you wish! ... just so long as they are all the same size

Seriously, I don't understand WHY quilt patterns don't give cutting instructions that would have you do the methods that would be the most accurate and easiest to work with? WHY do they say to cut 1/2 triangles and then sew them together, especially if you have to do them over and over with the same fabrics - using the square and then cutting them would be SO much better!
