I know some people don't care for their pets sleeping in their beds, but my dogs sleep with me and my DH. Don't worry, I wash sheets and covers A LOT and clean the house every day, lol.

Anyways a year ago when we bought this house, I bought all new bedding, including a nice new comforter set for the master bedroom. Yep- you guessed it- it could not hold up to the wear and tear of the dogs. (Particulary my doberman boy who likes to cover himself up by flinging the covers around violently.) I started in November or early December on a quilt using basket blocks in colors to match the decor of the bedroom. It seemed like as time stretched on, the more destructed the comforter on the bed got. Well, I dug in my heels today AND GOT THAT THING DONE!! My back hurts, and I am tired, but it is in the washing machine right now. YAY. My husband fell asleep watching tv to the sound on my sewing machine putting the binding on. Oh, and don't be a dummy like me- don't start cursing out the bobbin for making a rat's nest, when you don't notice the machine isn't threaded right. Duh!

My mind is already spinning trying to figure out what to start on next!

tlrnhi 02-04-2009 09:05 PM

So where's the picture??

I have 2 cats that HAVE to sleep with me. One between me and hubby and she tries to push me out of bed. lol

camillacamilla 02-04-2009 09:34 PM

Too tired for pictures tonight. I really didn't think I would get it done.

Celeste 02-04-2009 09:40 PM

Congratulations on getting it done! Can't wait to see it!

My EmmaLee is an undercover Doberman too. Used to have three at one time; all on the bed, two under the actual covers. Even with a queen sized bed, (they were why I got it in the first place), space was at a premium. They needed more room than I obviously did.

file that under nunanobody's business. your bed, your dogs, your house. my friends know that if they come to my house to inspect, they'd better bring supplies to "fix" anything they don't approve of.

congrats on getting your newest quilt done. once the backache wears off, it's all feel-good from here. :P

c2cd2008 02-05-2009 12:30 AM

My little Shih-Tzu sleeps with us too. Don't worry about what anyone else would think about you letting your pets sleep with you. Our pets are just like our kids, they are family. My little Ozzy does not even know he is dog!

Congrats on completing your project. I know its a huge undertaking to complete a very large quilt, but now you can sleep under something you made yourself and it will sleep better than any store bought comforter any day!

MsSage 02-05-2009 05:08 AM

Hmmmm pets sleeping with humans........Nope in my house I am allowed to sleep in the 3 cats and 2 dogs bed LOL
The mini doxie says it is so he can curl up in the crook of my knees and keep warm. Good thing they are all small.
Cant wait to see the quilt.

sandpat 02-05-2009 05:22 AM

I think more pets sleep in bed with people than the people let on...I know we have 3 cats..and its not a matter of us "letting" them sleep with us, I think its the other way around

So...where is the pic of this quilt??? Sounds really pretty! Some Aleve will help that back, also the big smile from having completed the quilt!

Barbm 02-05-2009 05:52 AM

A job well done- can't wait to see the pics!

Who cares if they sleep with you- you're probably never cold and so are they.

Bevanger 02-05-2009 06:01 AM

I have my white dog between us at night, red dog on bottom and cat on my hip. We have a king bed and i swear its getting smaller :?

Mousie 02-05-2009 06:08 AM

maybe that's why I don't sleep well, lol...no kitties in our bed. hubby insists all pets are outside, but remember we are in florida. They have nice warm beds that I made, and they are long haired. probably sleep together. they eat together. have a queen size bed and hubby takes his half out of the middle!

mommaB 02-05-2009 07:36 AM

My rottie gets most of the bed..and pillows   Fur is kinda like an extra blanket, right?? I will say when she gets up there and pants in the summer...well, remember the motel beds you put a quarter in :?: :?:   That's what its like :D My ex and I used to sleep in a full size with 2 rotties!! That was interesting  I did have a cheapie quilt from old time pottery store (cost maybe $15). It must have had nylon batting or polyester something, because it had static electricity in it and would spark when the dog moved!! Then it became a game like chase the laser!! When a 100# dog bounces the bed..look out floor, here I come!!

If you were up half the night sewing, no wonder you threaded the machine wrong!! No auto-pilot

Mousie 02-05-2009 06:49 PM

MommaB...all I can say...since..heehee...i am....heehee...laughing so hard...is

littlehud 02-05-2009 06:59 PM

As soon as you are rested send us a picture. As for the dogs sleeping with you I couldn't sleep if my cats weren't there with me. It's not my bed, they own it and share it with me. :D :D :D

patty48 02-05-2009 07:02 PM

Hubby banned the dog after ending up on the floor too many nights. The new cat (a rescue from -35 weather) sneaks up and very quietly settles at the bottom...probably just glad to be warm

Doesn't feel good to finally get a quilt done! Congrats. Can't wait to see the pics

Shemjo 02-05-2009 08:06 PM

I have an undercover rat terrier and an on top husky mix and various cats who take their places on the corners of the kingsize water bed! they sleep there during the day when the heat is down because it is always warm. Wouldn't feel right without the critter comfortors!

Tink's Mom 02-06-2009 01:52 PM

Tink lets me sleep in her queen size bed. I even have to cover her back up when I get up in the morning. She is a hard dog on a quilt, too. She decided to chew on my lighter weight quilt that I use in the summer. It is now going to be cut up and made into pillow cases and a small dog bed for her Tinkness for next to daddy's computer downstairs.

BlueChicken 02-06-2009 01:55 PM

I made my very first ever quilt for my elderly dog. The teacher in class thought I was mad. My theory was that knowing it was going to the dog I didn't feel any pressure to be "perfect" and could put all my energy into learning and practising without pressure.

And it came out really well! She was an awesome old dog with massive personality.

She died last year of old age, and we had her cremated in her quilt, which was kinda cool.

glad you got your quilt done, and glad you have room in your bed for your pets. My 2 dogs are both 100 lbs. there isn't room for them and my DH and me. And my bed's a queen. So they each have their own. But when DH is at work the Male takes over as the owner of our bed. My dogs are not dogs either, there my kids. My mother just HATES it. She is not an animal lover. But Dad's a farmer!! Wonder where I get my love of animals from. Spent most of my life in the barn instead of in the house. Now its the other way around, making quilts all day long. I love it!! Can't wait to see pics of your quilt! I'll be looking!

Therese 02-09-2009 07:31 AM

Doesn't it feel like such an accomplishment to finish a quilt? You're tired but happy! I sew til late in the night too, so I know about those stupid little mistakes!
Congrats. Can't wait to see pics!

Shemjo 02-09-2009 02:07 PM

Therese, Welcome to the board. Introduce yourself and tell us more about you!
Rebeerose, welcome also! C'mon, tell us about yourself!

I solved my animal problem. I had two of my first quilts folded and ready to give to the homeless shelter. THen I decided to use them on my bed after my my dear husband passed away. I only had a ShitZui at the time. They are one person dogs. He was my husband's companion his last two years. When he died, Poochie ( who was adopted) was lonesome. My Gdaughter is a vet tech and said he missed Gpa. One day she drove in and handed me this little five week old puppy just the length of my hand. First month Pooch didn't know whether to eat her or stomp on her. Now, 3 years later, they're best buds and both sleep on my bed. I also inherited two lovely cats from my Gdaughter. Now all four sleep on the bed. I use those old first time quilts which were pretty bad and don't worry about them. When I'm having company, I yank them off and throw my good ones on the bed. It's great to see them all cuddled together. And they keep my feet warm. Yes, it gets cold in Florida.

peaceandjoy 02-09-2009 04:50 PM

I'm looking forward to seeing your quilt!

After many years of not having a pet in bed, DH recently caved in and now lets our cat in. His reasoning for years was that there were two, they could keep each other company. But we had to have one put down in November... Eventually DH agreed that our Six (pronounced "Cease") was lonely and could come in.

Ahhh... Bliss! Well, at least until about 5 AM when he starts wanting breakfast. Better than any alarm clock!

There are three repeated sayings in our home----IF YOU WANT THE BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE, YOU'LL HAVE TO MOVE THE CAT-------NO OUTFIT IS COMPLETE WITHOUT CAT HAIR-------- I'M SORRY BUT CAT HAIR IS A CONDIMENT IN OUR HOUSE! Mrsjdt

Camilla, congrats!!!! You will love yourself and your quilt for finishing. I well understand that pressure we put upon ourselves "get it done, get it done, get it done" along with the millions of other things to do. I am so happy for you that you finished it. Now you can smile every single day when you make your bed with your beautiful new creation on it. Can't wait to see the pix!

Shemjo 02-09-2009 08:18 PM

Welcome Martha D. Tell us about yourself! You already know we love pictures!

I'm beginning to feel like the Lone Ranger. I must be the only quilter who has no pets (as I've mentioned on another thread, my only pets are the dust bunnies under the furniture.)

gcathie 02-11-2009 02:12 AM

Don't think bad of me but our dogs have there own bed in our sun room....because our boy dog thinks he is my bodygaurd and when he was allowed to sleep in the bed he wouldn't let DH touch me....he even bit him....mind you this is a Chihuahua that thinks he is ten feet tall and bullet proof....Dh wasn't having that so they have their own bed and seem to be quite happy with that....:-)

And we would love to see your quilts....please.....

LOL!...nonsense Gail. Every pet on here is family. You have more pets than you know what to do with and more love too! I feel a little bad when ppl talk about their pets being inside, but me and hubby have allergies. One of my girls had a parakeet and every time I went in her room I came out chasing after my nose...(running, lol! I knew somebody might go, huh???)

I can relate to the allergies. Which is funny, because I was a pet groomer for many years. I am not allergic to dogs, but have developed an allergy to cats. And I have 5 PERSIAN CATS. It doesn't bother me until I give them haircuts. Then my nose is on FIRE!! Itches and burns sooooooo bad. It wasn't like that when I groomed full time. My cats are all very old, and have to have haircuts for hygiene reasons, so it has to be done. (They are inside kitties too. 3 of them where "throw aways" no one wanted.) I did have 6 persians, but one of them died in Nov of 07 at 17 1/2 years old. Blind as a bat but old Eli could knock a doberman in line like nobody's business!

I haven't posted a pic because my quilt is in heavy use now. And no doubt, covered in hair. I do think my next quilt will have a higher loft batting for the dobermans to stay a little warmer. They get cold easy.

I often said old Eli was the Don of the Persian Mafia. He literally used his whiskers and his memory to navigate around walls and furniture. He had no problem finding the litter pan, food, or his favorite chair. Every now and then, I would hear him do the growl/war whoop. I would look over and one of the dogs would be standing near him. Then the dog's face would be flying back and the dog would get MOVING. Still not sure how he knew precisely where to hit, but he did so with amazing accuracy. He was completely blind. You could be loving on him and wave fingers in front of his eyes, he wouldn't blink or follow your fingers at all.No vision. He was a great old cat. The dogs have another opinion of him, I am sure.

Mousie 02-12-2009 05:26 AM

wow, camilla, Eli was soome cat and you tell his story very well. you could write books, I do believe. :-)

Well, thank you for the compliment. I tend to write messages the way I talk, but I am not sure how that would translate into book writing.

What! You mean I can't post a picture if my quilt has pet hair on it? I guess you will never see any more of my work! Critters around here do NOT obey! Cats think it is a game to see who can be first on a new piece of fabric! And they especially LOVE a newly pressed piece of fabric that is still warm! Can't turn my back! And "Shoo!" is another game! :( :?
