Just an Idea I have.

Just an idea that I have here. Not sure it will work or not or if it is even a smart idea. But in my head I think its a good idea and even one that will work.

I have a bar of irish spring soap still in the box that I have taken the flap off of one end of it. When my pins get dull, I stab them into the bar of soap a couple times and it seems to sharpen the points.

Now my idea.....

Why can't you cut a bar of soap into littler "blocks" "cubes" or chunks and put them INSIDE of homemade pin cushions? And I thought even about maybe doing a little velcroed opening so that you can replace the soap.

Does this sound like a good idea? And doable? Or is this one of those far fetched ideas that Only I have in my head?.

That works with the soap exposed in your hand but would move out of the way inside of cloth I would think. My daughter showed me how she pulled the safety pin through her hair and it would slip through the cloth diaper so easily. Wool inside a pincushion would do the same, put oil on your pins and needles and they won't rust. But you try your idea and if it works for you, it will work for us.

It's worth a try. Your pincushion is most likely made out of scraps anyway, right? just add soap

When my sons were still in diapers, I used a bar of soap to help the diaper pins glide more easily into the diapers. Enclosing it is a good idea, because the soap crumbles after a while.

Give it a try. I keep an open box of Irish Spring in my sewing room, and also the kitchen. Keeps it smelling fresh.

When my kids were little and using cloth diapers I had a crochet duck made a round a bar of soap that is where I kept my diaper pins

Is it only Irish Spring or will any brand of soap work?

I think I used Dove or Ivory any kind should work,

I had one of those too, any soap will work but those with oils in them will be better (i.e. Dove or those for dry skin) and any that are scented will add fragrance to the room.

Every since I started sewing when I was young, whenever a needle or pin got stubborn on going in the fabric, I always stroked it through my hair and it would work great after that. Someone once told me she had seen her grandmother do that when she saw me do it. I told her the oil lubricated the pin to make it easier to push into fabric. Sure beats having a bar of soap around. I know where my hair is, but that bar of soap can get lost so easily.
