i need to make a couple of quilts for 5 year old boys for a special xmas gift. what size do you usually make these - they are not meant to be "bed spreads" - more of just cuddle up quilts when watching TV, to take in their cars etc.

I usually do 44 x 55

If you choose backing first, use the width of that fabric for one dimension. (Flannel, for example, is usually 42 -43" wide.)
For "lap" quilts, you want the length to be between 54" (1 1/2 yd) and 63" (1 3/4 yd).

Mine are usually 60x60...it is big enough to curl up inside...and the kids will stay toasty warm, especially if you back it with flannel.

This is how I do mine. Saves a lot on the backing fabric.

I use fleece for the backing because it comes in a 58-60 inch width. You can buy a yard and a half and make a 50 x 60 inch lap blanket. Or you can buy two yards and go 60 x 72 if you want it a little bigger.

I always buy the anti-pill fleece because it wears better...
