Are "Kits" a good way to get starting into quilting for a beginner. I want to start, but, I don't really know enough to start on my own. Thanks in advance. ANY HELP WILL BE OF HELP. Diane

Which type of kit are you talking about? a Quilt kit with fabric and pattern or a quilters kit with mat, rotary cutter, ruler ect?

Hi and welcome from Iowa. Kits, IMHO, can be tricky at times altho I have a friend who buys them. Since I am also a beginner I like more control over the amount of fabric I buy (in case of mistakes you see - smile).

I would pick a simple pattern such as the rail fence to make a first quilt. You pick your own fabric and I think you will like the outcome.

Keep asking questions and post your pics (smile).

Some kits have precut pieces some don't. All precut is easier, you can just focus on your piecing skills.

Kits that don't have precut pieces may be more difficult than following a pattern and cutting your own.
You have to make sure and cut them precisely, as some don't give you hardly any extra fabric. If you cut against the width instead of length, you may run out of fabric. :wink:

It is a personal preference, I enjoy kits if the price is right :D:D:D

My first "real" quilt was made with a kit from Heidi Pridemore's Whimsical Workshop. The kit was generous with the fabric and Heidi responded very promptly to the couple of emails I sent her.

The "kits" I am referring to are with Material & Instructions. I have been gathering most of the quilting tool necessary. I just need to get up enough courage, nerve, gumption and etc. to get started. Thanks again. Diane

Do you have any Quilt shops that give beginner classes...If you ck at Joann's they sell beginner kits with precut pieces and really easy instructions...Cottage Rose comes to mine...

Ok, Just checking :) precut kits are good, or you could do a simple quilt and just cut out blocks as wide as your ruler is. it will give you a square to work with and some practice cutting.

I like kits, haven't been left short on fabric amounts, but have gotten a kit where the instructions weren't the best. I would get a kit and go for it. Choose a fairly simple pattern though for the first. When I started I got a book, picked a pattern, got some fat quarters and had a blast - nearly 16 years ago!
