My son's girlfriend died unexpectedly one year ago and today he gave me 3 bags filled with her clothes. He asked me to make some kind of quilt out of them and of course I said I would. Now What!? A lot of these clothes are good quality KNITS and I can't imagine how to quilt using these fabrics. I am asking anyone with any ideas to please help. I am open to all suggestions. Backing the fabric with fusible interfacing will help with the stretchiness of the fabric.

Double-knit fabrics wear like iron. It's best to tie that type of quilt.

If they are thin knits that are going to stretch on you, I can recommend nylon tricot as an iron-on stabilizer. Many stabilizers make the fabric too stiff; nylon tricot is better than most.

I have never worked with knit fabrics, but I would think you could also make a quilt with them using a foundation technique -- either muslin or paper.

In any case, you don't want to try an intricate pattern. I would try to keep the pieces large -- perhaps all squares with sashing -- and plan on tying the quilt. Warm n Natural is good for tying because it is very stable and the ties don't have to be too close together.

It may be a good idea to stitch round the edges to stop any unravelling, also if any is "dryclean only" put it through a gentle wash cycle to see how it will go with the other items.

It will definitely be a winter quilt.

I made a double knit quilt in the 80's when I was teaching myself to quilt. I still have & use it. Wears like a dream. I didn't have any raveling at all, but when I cut it out I used pinking shears. If you plan to rotary cut, you can buy a wavy blade to cut with....that will take care of any ravels.
Made if from my MIL clothes that she out grew!
