I am curious to know for those of you that hand piece or quilt, if you use a knot. I know there is a "quilters knot". However, my Grannie who taught me said, "A quilt should never know a knot." Instead, she made two tiny little stitches at the beginning and end. It is amazing that I remember this from a very small child. As I am working on the vintage quilts, I find her two tiny little stitches. I can tell when a quilt was quilted by a group (quilting bee) because I find knots.

Quilter's knots are normally hidden inside the batting. They would not be actually seen on the quilt. The knots are "popped" through the top.

You could do both -- a quilter's knot and a little backstitch or double stitch at the beginning.

My knots show. I never seem to get the hang of a quilter's knot. But the small stitch idea is one I will be trying. thanks

When beginning, I knot and pop the knot into the quilt. At the end, I go back through my last one or two stitches...

I knot and pop the thread too... when I hand stitched I also knotted the thread :D:D:D

I knot and hide in the batting. I think it allows more stretch in washing without breaking a thread. Hope I'm right?

I do both.
