I have made a lot of quilts and have put my name and date I made it only on a few. Do I make my own lablels and how? How much do I put on them and how big is acceptable?

I use muslin about 3x5" and fabric pens. At the least write my name date and where I live. Sometimes I add the quilt pattern and if a gift then a message for the recipient. Since I quilt for others I also keep a portfolio with pictures, commission details etc. I doubt anyone butmyself will care about all these items but the data is preserved for the future.

I usually use a piece of the backing fabric for the label. I name the quilt (usually the name of the pattern), my name, who I made it for, my town and state, and the date. I sometimes add scripture or the phrase "made with love and bound in prayer." I put a label of every quilt I make except the baby quilts, which will get washed to death ... I wasn't sure a label would hold up. I have used a permanent marker on the early quilts I made; now I embroider all my labels.

I embroider mine now but before that I used pigma pens. Most of mine are labeled.

I think labels are pretense. I don't want to give an heirloom - I want the quilt to be USED UP!

I will embroider right onto the backing using the same color thread as the fabric before assembling the quilt.
The information is there but not the focal point.
I gave a quilt( without the labeling) to a friend and they sent it back because there was no name or date on it. So I added a lable. Guess they find it more personnal with the name. They use the quilt daily.

There are some fabric panels (I think Thimbleberries has one) out there that have decorative quilt labels pre-printed and the center area is blank so that you can hand write information about you quilt with fabric pens. Then you can turn the edges and hand stitch to the back of your quilt.

If you are a computer person you can purchase fabric sheets that run through your printer and design unique labels for yourself.

I use muslin and put the name of the quilt, the year it was finished, who it's for, made by me and quilted by if I have it longarm quilted. Sometimes I just write the labels with ZigWriter pens or I use printer fabric sheets.

hey, thanks everyone. I have embrodyed a couple by hand and did a couple on the machine. just wandering how everybody else does it. I sold a couple and didn't put a label on. Now I wish I had. The muslin was a good idea. I think I will try that the next time.
