My MIL is in a wheel chair and she was a sewer. Her lap quilts (yes -- more than one since they do walk inspite of having her name embroidered in large letters) measure 36-w x 28 (she dictated the size by holding her hands where she wanted it) - with very rounded corners on the bottom (I also angled in the bottom about 1" on either side. I do a lightweight fleece, double thickness, no batting -- 1/2" seam envelop finish. She is in California.

I make shawls for people in nursing homes using two layers of flannel, no batting. I also put pockets in them because older people often have cold hands.
