What's considered a typical "lap quilt" size? In the crib quilt range?

grammyp 04-13-2010 07:17 PM

Mine are usually about 45 x 60, depending on the block size I use. But I believe originally they were about 36 square and intended to only cover your lap when you were sitting. I call mine lap quilts, but I guess actually the should be called comfort or couch quilts.

Here is a link to "usual" sizes:

I've been making "lap" quilts for charity. A 36 square is ok for wheel chair. Even this varies . I tried to make them 40x60 like you said a couch throw size. I find these are a little small for practical purposes so now I make them 52 X 68. really depends what the end purpose is.

My question always is, How many laps?

OK, good point here. DH would probably appreciate dual occupancy. :) (Then of course there's the cat's opinion.)

I like to make mine 50 X 72, you can turn them sideways for more than one lap, or lay down and completely cover up, from head to toe :D:D:D

I guess the best question would be "What's the average American size lap?" And maybe we don't want to know the answer to that!! hehe.

I agree. I take the person height into consideration when I do these. I can't stand it when my feet hang out the end!!!

GORGEOUS!! I like mine that size also. I want my feet covered up.

newestnana 04-14-2010 05:34 AM

I like to use the term "cuddle" size...meaning at least one person could cuddle under it on a couch (or sleep under it on a couch). And the order of 56x70 or so works for that.

In my opinion, a 36x36 quilt is truly a lap quilt, e.g., for a person in a wheelchair.

Thank you!
I like my feet wrapped and up under my chin.
While doing stitching or on the computer it is folded in half, covers my feet to my lap.

I love your log cabin quilt. I like mine to cover all me when I lay down.

Nanjun 04-15-2010 07:28 AM

So pretty.
We make lap quilts for nursing home and they are 36"square.

I too make them a bit bigger, so I can snuggle under them.

SUPERB , do so envy your talent, absolutely adore log cabin---------I too agree your measurements but have two 55x55 and turn them having "pointed" ends to my face/feet, this serves me well as am only 5ft 2 ins!!

I like to make mine 60" long and 45" wide, My husband even likes his a bit longer, I guess it depends on the persons size.

bjdemir 04-16-2010 08:48 PM

The one I am making will be abou 63 by 62. All the material I have as it is made from old men's shirts.

I guess it depends on who/what it's for.

When my mom was making "lap quilts" as a charity project for nursing homes, they were approximately 36 x 45.

I think they were mainly to cover people's legs and laps when they were in wheelchairs. If they were too big, they got caught in the wheelchair wheels.

ann clare 04-24-2010 12:23 PM

Interesting topic. Very helpful replies.

bearisgray 04-24-2010 12:31 PM

But they were supposed to be big enough to tuck around their laps. A 36 x 36 would be about a lap napkin for me. :?
