I’m working on my first big quilt (queen sized Irish chain) and was wondering if you all have any advice or tips when working on large quilts? I was going to ‘graduate’ to the larger sizes, but found myself cutting away at fabric till the queen size just happened.

I’ve most of the blocks strip pieced and ready to assemble (whew!) and I plan on hand quilting it afterwards. The advice on ripping long strips (see “The long cut” post) for the borders will help, but is there anything else I should approach differently?

I find the walking foot is helpful for piecing as well as quilting. I tend to use sashing around my blocks and this keeps the sashing exactly where it should be on those long runs.

I'm using the quarter inch foot on the blocks to keep them even and the Irish chain doesn't entail sashing (would break the chain), but I'll file the ideas for later use. Thanks vicki! :D
