layout help with my first quilt!

1 Attachment(s)
This is my first shot at quilting. I figured I could probably sew pretty straight lines, so chose this pattern. Plus I love it!

I'm not quite happy with the layout of the small strips, but I can't quite figure out why. Does anyone have any suggestions for moving elements around? This current look is what the instructions said to do, but it's not grabbing me, yet. Or is it just because it's hanging on the wall?

I hope the color comes out ok on this site. On my Mac, I can never tell how images are going to look.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm about to go nuts with it.

Thanks. Lori

I like it! Once it is framed with borders, and quilted, it will be beautiful!

joyce888 11-10-2011 02:06 PM

I think you'll be surprised once it's sewn and bordered. Great pattern.

sewmary 11-10-2011 02:08 PM

Oh that's neat. It will be a beuatiful quilt when it is finished. Keep going and show us when it is finished!

Maybe move the center dk yellow to the upper left corner and see what happens. I think it is going to be stunning when done.

cheaha39 11-10-2011 02:18 PM

I like it, but for me I would have to loose the yellow. The yellow just grabs my eyes and I miss the overall quilt. But that is just me and my old eyes. For me it would be more purple.

Mariposa 11-10-2011 02:18 PM

It looks good as it is. Perhaps as a change- move the yellows to all be more towards the top, rather than bottom. Maybe give it kind of a sunshine aspect-??

Debbie C 11-10-2011 02:34 PM

IMHO I feel the yellows should be more spread out. The eye immediately is drawn to the center where all the yellows seem to be converging. Other than that, I think the overall look is quite lovely and I look forward to seeing it complete.

I agree maybe moving the yellow can help, also maybe a darker purple can pop the blues and lavender

Hmmmm. Looks like you are doing a "Maverick Quilt" design. Perhaps the yellow would work if the strips were narrower. Otherwise the bright yellow is a bit glaring. How about adding some strips with the purpley brown? Otherwise I love the design and colors.

l *love* your quilt! l think it will be so pretty when finished ........ cool pattern ... simple, yet interesting :D

KerryK 11-10-2011 02:56 PM

I think it is very pretty as it is. However, if I had to suggest a change, I think I would like it with just plain bold purple strips. I think that would make the blues and other purple hues just stand out more.

linda faye 11-10-2011 03:13 PM

I love the fabric and the colors. For me it is very relaxing. I took a piece of paper and blocked the stripes with yellow/gold in them (left to right) so that only the two left stripes were visible. That would be the adjustment I would suggest and let the yellow in the fabric just be the sun breaking through the other colors. What is your border/binding going to be? Perhaps frame it in narrow yellow and continue with your border? Please keep us posted. Great first quilt!

Now that I look at the pattern image , I can see I'm missing the interlocked idea that she's got going. Not sure how that happened...

PTM 11-10-2011 03:32 PM

The border will be blue, quite similar to the pattern; maybe a bit brighter. I'm thinking maybe take the paler yellow out all together and put the lighter blue in it's place, then use some of the other "blender" fabric where the lighter blue is.

twixbar 11-10-2011 03:51 PM

I really like it, I am trying to figure out how to put my strips together. Enjoy making it.

nyleve 11-10-2011 04:02 PM

Yellow adds warmth to a quilt, try grouping the yellow strips light to dark...will give more of a bargello look...and maybe group all the yellow strips together

OK, this rearrangement looks a lot better and more like the pattern. I need to figure out what to do about 1 more blending fabric. To use more of one that's already in use, or get another one!

MadQuilter 11-10-2011 04:55 PM

I like it much better with the bright yellow gone. How about bringing in more of the deep purple stripe?

newbee3 11-10-2011 04:59 PM

I think it looks okay but if you are not happy with it move them around until you do like it.

I also think that the yellow would find a different quilt. I love the quilt pattern.

vickimc 11-10-2011 05:08 PM

very interesting. I havent see this before. I like it!

Jeanniejo 11-10-2011 05:18 PM

The 2 bright yellows draw my eye to the . Maybe spread them out more and turn the bright yellows so they are on the bottom as well.

heather1949 11-10-2011 05:19 PM

I love the colors and the design, you are doing a great job, love to see the finished quilt please.

SherryW 11-10-2011 05:56 PM

I think it's pretty.

dublb 11-10-2011 06:04 PM

You've got a great start. I think I would lay out the strips a little differently. Start with one color, say the yellow, in the top of the first row, then take that yellow to the next row but start it where the first row ends, then take that yellow to the third row and start it down the row where it ends in the 2nd row. So on and so on. Then start with the next softer or color that strikes your fancy and blends with the yellow, moving it into the spots after the yellows. It might give it movement with the cloud effect.

Is that clear as mud? Do I need to take it to paint and do some coloring or do you get my meaning? :) I really like the fabrics and the quilt. You are doing a great job!!!

Yes, I agree. Much better. Very pretty.

dlong 11-11-2011 08:42 AM

For my own personal taste, I would probably drop the yellow and replace with the muted blue or the medium purple. Even if you decide to leave the yellow, it's a gorgeous quilt. Just a matter of what each person likes the best.

Taino Jan 11-11-2011 08:55 AM

I like the new arrangement much better. It will be a great quilt when done. Well done.
