Never use your rotary cutter when sick. I had the brilliant idea to open a box, and sliced my thumb open. I bled through 3 band-aids!!
I am avoiding my cutter for the moment, until I recover from the cold - and the thumb!!!

butterflywing 12-05-2009 03:52 PM

why in the world did you do that? be carefuller, please

Shemjo 12-05-2009 03:54 PM

Oooo, hope you get to feeling better soon. When my body doesn't feel good, my brain takes a break too and I can really do stupid stuff.

b.zang 12-05-2009 04:10 PM

Okay, I can follow the initial thought, but the question immediately comes up "won't it make the cutter dull?"

My head is clogged up with a cold right now, too, and it sure interferes with thinking!

Ninnie 12-05-2009 04:19 PM

I know how you feel, I dropped mine once, and cut a deep gash in my leg LOL I now have one that automatically closes.

quiltsRfun 12-05-2009 04:47 PM

now have one that automatically closes
Sounds like a good idea to me. It's on my wish list right now.

littlehud 12-05-2009 07:10 PM

We all do silly things when we don't feel good. I hope you get to feeling better and your thumb heals fast.

zkosh 12-05-2009 07:34 PM

I hope you soon feel better. My husband once set our house on fire when he didn't feel well. He thought making french fries would help. I was out of town and came home to find him, the kids and the cat at his mother's. We were out of the house 3 months while everything was redone.

Okay, maybe that didn't make you feel any better and I know your cut still hurts, but it could be worse I guess. Hope you're soon back to cutting! :|

amma 12-05-2009 07:38 PM

(((HUGS))) I hope that you get to feeling better soon, and that you leave the rotary for fabrics

MadQuilter 12-05-2009 07:45 PM

Try avoiding your rotary cutter for anything other than cutting fabric.

Dora 12-05-2009 08:55 PM

HUGS DOra

these last few days..Be extra careful of those Blade's
from now on..

Tiffany 12-05-2009 09:45 PM

Ouch! I sure hope you heal fast, both from the cold and the cut.

Esqmommy 12-05-2009 09:48 PM

I've done that too, and can totally relate! It hurts like crazy and it bleeds a lot. I sliced into my nail, and it's never been the same since. I will say, I don't mind having a quilter's scar...sort of a badge of honor.

Hope you feel better soon. Colds suck, to be blunt.

sewNso 12-06-2009 07:04 AM

Bless your heart. i hope it wasn't too bad. get better soon.

I thought of you when I got my tree out today. It was packed away last year in a new box and I had taped it shut. ( lots of tape ) It was nearly impossible to open and I couldn't find my box cutter. I spied my rotary cutter in my table and just for a minute thought about using it. Then I remembered you and your poor thumb and decided just to work the tape loose by hand. Thanks for saving me.

I usually have some sort of a 'nick ' on my left index fingernail....never bled... yet, but have taken off some of my finger print, thank goodness for calluses. Most of my accidents consist of bad fabric cuts, which I have to say are WAY more painful than losing some skin for me.

I was watching the Dr. Oz show just before Thanksgiving and he addressed cuts from knives while preparing for the holiday. One interesting tidbit--if you have a cut that just doesn't quit that slight "ooze", try using a product such as Visine. Visine reduces the bloodshot look in the eye and will help with stopping the "ooze" apparently!

littlehud 12-08-2009 07:29 AM

Leave it to Dr Oz. I never would have thought of Visine, but it makes sense.

OmaForFour 12-08-2009 07:31 AM

Ouch! God Bless You! Heal quickly!

Boston1954 12-08-2009 09:46 AM

Oh my goodness! I can feel it from here. I would almost rather have a broken leg than a cut of any kind. (notice I said almost). Hope you feel better. Get a nice cup of hot chocolate (do not spill it on yourself) and watch an old movie.

OUCH-but I did just that recently & applied an old remedy to the wound that really helped it heal....I applied blk.pepper right away..Does not burn or sting, but it speeds the clotting & healing/ I wrapped my finger in gauze leaving the pepper on, what a mess-but I did not ruin the project I was sewing.

Wow, pepper!?! Really? I'm going to have to try and remember that. I'm allergic to Visine, and most other chemicals, so any kind of old fashioned remedy that works can be a lifesaver for me. Thanks for sharing!

oldswimmer 12-09-2009 11:27 AM

Oh my... hope you are on the mend! I almost cut my finger a week or so ago.... and two days ago I bought a "Klutz Glove". I figure better safe than sorry. And I too like the cutters that automatically close. They seem to work very well for me.

earlylace 12-12-2009 05:56 AM

I know what you all mean, when I wasn't feeling well I backed my car into my son's off duty police car!

Lostn51 12-12-2009 08:20 AM

I hate that you cut your finger, Trust me I know how you feel.

I cut the top of my index finder completely off a few months back while doing something stupid that involved the biggest sharpest knife we own and a banana. And I refused to go to the hospital to sew it on so I put the top of my finger back on and bandaged it up real good and let the good Lord handle the rest!

I still have stupidity written on my forehead from that one.

Lesson: never mix cold/flu medicine with sharp objects!!!
