I have this pretty cool sewing room that I would like to share, maybe get together with other quilters or sewers from time to time, I live just north of the city, out on a small acerage, I just recently got some new equipment. Including an HQ Sixteen. I am a stay at home mom that is in need of some encouragement to getting back into the swing of things.

sewjoyce 02-03-2009 06:26 PM

Hi and Welcome from southern Indiana!! You will find lots of friends and encouragement here :!:

Jim's Gem 02-03-2009 06:27 PM

Are you going to share a picture of your sewing room with us? I'd love to see it. I have a long arm on my wish list for someday. I used to be a stay at home mom, had 20 years at home, had to go to work when DH retired from the Navy 7 years ago. My youngest was in 6th grade then. I really enjoyed being home with them and really miss the kids now that they are all out of the house.

cutebuns 02-03-2009 06:33 PM

I don't have a pic right now, will have to take some, I have a 17 x 32 foot garage that I took over, I have a wood stove to sit by on cold winter days and a big door to open on warm summer ones. I have shelves and drawers aplenty, 2 sergers including an image from babylock, a quest also from babylock, an older brother that doubles for embroidery, a Brother PR620 and the hq sixteen. I am fully loaded with thread and all sorts of fabric, patterns etc. I am not all set up and sorted yet. but getting there. I also have a 4x8 foot cutting table.

Welcome from NE CA. Glad you joined us. Unfortunately for me, I don't live close to you. With this move, my sewing room shrank from a 500 sq.ft studio to maybe 150 sq. ft. It's barely big enough for my fabric. But in a couple of years, we'll have a real house with a sewing room. I can hardly wait. We do love lots of pictures though.

b.zang 02-03-2009 07:18 PM

I'm only about 10 hours from you. Maybe one day I'll make a destination trip to your place :) Not in the winter, though.

cutebuns 02-03-2009 07:22 PM

In the warmer weather, bring a tent or trailer, I live on an acerage and have lots of room to put you. The more the merrier, I seem to have all sorts of people (not that most of them sew) out here all the time, We just had 9 kids (only 3 are mine) for a part of Christmas break. and I think 21 kids were here for my duaghters birthday party and I think there were 11 kids when i woke still here, only 2 of them were mine.

b.zang 02-03-2009 07:32 PM

Sounds like fun - I'll keep you in mind. I have a camper but there's sure no room to sew in there!

Margie 02-03-2009 07:37 PM

WOW that sounds like a wonderful sewing room!! I live in PA...so not an "easy drive" for a sewing trip lol. Enjoy it

Margie

you can be amazed at what you can do, my parents have a small 21foot 5th wheel and my mom figured how to get sewing and knitting and crocheting supplies on hand. A little shoppin along the way. Quilting can take up more room, if you have stuff precut, it can me easier. means you have to be more organized that I usually am, It would be perfect, I have everything here that anyone could need pretty much. magazines, books, machines, patterns, kids to distract you when you need a break. I have not taken any formal classes but I read a lot, I have done lots of quilts already. Some better than others. love to have someone to come out and play and have a good time with. Love to have someone that can teach me a few things and maybe learn a few things from me.

Shemjo 02-03-2009 08:45 PM

Welcome from St. Louis!  Sounds like you are setting up a shop! You should be able to really turn out great pieces with all that room and equipment! Do have fun!

ScubaK 02-03-2009 08:53 PM

welcome from washington

Marcia 02-04-2009 08:18 AM

Welcome from Georgia. I am afraid I am WAY to far away-but your invitation sounds so fun!!! I am sure you will find someone to "play" with soon--you have all the goodies to lure in a quilting friend. :-)

mary quite contrary 02-04-2009 08:28 AM

Boy I wish we lived closer. Texas, USA is a little far. You never know. If I am ever that way I just might look you up.

I've often thought we could hop clear around this world hopping from quilt friend to quilt friend.

Bill'sBonBon 02-04-2009 08:37 AM

WoW! Does it sound like fun. But I am also in Georgia USA,so just more than a little out of the way for me. Sure would like to come and play though thanks for the invite.

Any time that you all are in the area, just message me and drop on by, lots of room here, in and out of the house, There are some fishing places close by, my husband has been known to go out, not sure if it is on a lake or what, I don't go with him. There is also a quad and dune buggies, lots to see and do.

cutebuns 02-04-2009 10:46 AM

to be honest, it is a mess right now. It is a work in progress, if I focus for a few days most of the stuff will find a proper home etc, I am all scattered right now. It would be easier if I only did one kind of thing, but since I do crafts, sewing, quilting, embroidery work, there is stuff from all of that floating around, it also has most of the comforts of home, tv dvd player, fridge, microwave, coffee tea, I have a peg board but short pegs. oh and did I gotget the say that there is a dune buggy keeping warm in here right now. It doesn't like the cold.

raksmum 02-04-2009 08:26 PM

You should consider taking a class at Quilt Essential in St. Albert. You will meet lots of quilters from your neck of the woods there. I am in Edmonton and have met other quilters from Legal at classes. Apparently there is a wonderful long arm quilter in Legal that lots of the gals take there quilts to.

cutebuns 02-04-2009 08:35 PM

I have been thinking of taking a class, just when ever I look, can't decide what one to take and at what level I should be at. I have never taken a quilting course, and I have my own habits, not that some of them don't need to be cleaned up a little, but I have heard some instructors have their pet peeves. That and when I look at what they want me to bring to class, it seem excessive to what I use at home, I am wondering if I really want to carry all that around with me. Basically I am really shy and have a hard time just walking into someplace like that by myself. so most of the rest is just an excuse.

brendadawg 02-09-2009 08:02 AM

Wow, Conyers, Georgia, sure isn't near you -- but I sure wish it could be! Maybe Marcia, also from Georgia, I see, and I could "carpool". Sounds like a fun thing to be able to visit with you in your wonderful space.

borntoquilt 02-09-2009 09:19 AM

cutebuns 02-09-2009 10:59 AM

I have yet to turn it on, okay I turned it on the HQ sixteen but don't have anything done yet to go on it. I am just going to load some stuff on it and do some practicing, My daughters 15th birthday is on Mon so I was hoping to get something done for then. I have the groovie boards for it and hope to be able to use them and do freehand as well. Practice, I need to practice lots. You never know. I do have pics of previous works, like ones from this summer, they are recently posted under pictures. I am hoping to be able to get some done here shortly, I am working on some custom embroidery for uniforms for my kids biathlon team. They should be done in the next day or two. I have to do some cleaning and sorting before delving in to deep, my cutting table has a corner of it showing where I have been hooping. The quilting table is also piled high with the uniforms etc. I figure in about 20 years I should be organized and all of the, I lost my round tuit that my mom gave me and I blame it all on that.

Hi form Florida. I have belonged to our American Sewing Guild for the past twenty years. We cover central FL and for convenience, meet in smaller neighborhood groups. There's nothing like sewing with friends. And boy, do you learn a lot. Do you have a local newspaper? Maybe you can put an article in there. Or try a note up on the local market bulletin board. You'd be surprised how quickly others will want to join you. Let us know if you have any luck.

Check out the quilt shop in st albert. It's fabulous and the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. I will be back in edmonton at the end of March and can hardly wait to go there again! There's also a great one in southern Edmonton but I haven't been to that one yet. Hear that it is great too. Have fun.

kd124 02-09-2009 07:28 PM

Sounds wonderful. Hope you find a quilting buddy or two. I have my sis and sometimes a friend comes over. Makes it nice.
Welcome to the board.

cutebuns 02-09-2009 09:15 PM

I am hoping to find one or two. I am going to try a couple of the suggestions. We will see if it works, I am hopeful anyway. It will encourage me to get some of it cleaned up and stuff. I have been procrastinating on some if it. Just hoping I think that it will do itself.

May I suggest something to you. It would probably be very beneficial for you to take a beginner's course first, even though you have quilted on your own before. In the beginner's class you will learn the basics that will give you a good foundation. And then you can go on from there. (Also, since you are shy and probably lack confidence, being in a class that is not a complete "foreign language" to you, will build up your confidence and make you feel more comfortable.)

I'm a shy person too, but I've found a way to ease myself into a group or class that really works for me. When I register for a class or event, I get there early -- sometimes I'm the first one to arrive. That way I get to meet the teacher/presenter one on one. Usually I "apologize" for being early and that helps break the ice. It's much more comfortable to meet the others as they trickle in. This may sound silly, but it works for me. Try it at least once and see how it's not so bad. The fun you have and the things you learn far ourweigh your lack of confidence and your shyness. Good luck and happy quilting.

cutebuns 02-11-2009 07:44 AM

Thank you very much Gail, that is wonderful advice. I am not sure the beginners course is where I should be, though it probably wouldn't hurt me any, when I say I have done some quilting, I have done more than 20 quilts and they were all done in less than a 2 year span. I also have excessive sewing experience, that is where some of my bad habits come from, like I like to iron and not press, but it is something that I am working on. not that I don't expect to learn something taking the course, for me it would be more of a social thing than anything, I think you can learn something from the newest quilter to the oldest quilter.

Welcome cutebuns from the Piedmont of North Carolina.
Your sewing room sounds wonderful.
So much room to design and create.

a few pics, but I have to update them as I have done some cleaning since I took them, you can see most of my table now

a few more, the shelves will hopefully have a bunch more fabric once I empty some more boxes. I have more pegs on my board as well but still need a bunch more, I have almost 400 colors of embroidery thread and it is hard to get them someplace where I can see to choose them when I am working.
