I was told you can sew the backing, batting and pattern together as you go. What I don't know is if my finished block is 12in., how big of a square should I cut the backing before I start sewing the top onto it? Has anyone ever done this before?

I have done a couple logcabin this way. If I remember right, I had the back piece for each block about 1inch larger all around, then turned it under to stitch. It was several years ago that I did it. If I can find my pattern in the morning, I'll see what it says. It was quite easy to do. Have been thinking I should do one again.

I would cut the first one 2 inches bigger and see how much it shrinks as you quilt as you go. I would even cut the batting a bit bigger than the top piece too. :D:D:D

Do you quilt each block as you go when you do it this way? This sounds interesting. I'll be watching for answers too!

Ok, I found my instruction sheet for this method. It was from Woman's Day Magazine, Aug. 1977. I knew it had been "several" years ago!! This is done in the flip and sew method......rather like the string quilting. The back is cut at 15.5 inches. The batting is cut at 15.5 inches. The logs and center sq. are cut 2.5 inches. You center the 2 center squares, right sides together on center of layered back and batting. Be sure they are centered exactly. Stitch 1/4 inch on one side. Flip, and add the next strip, etc. until block is finished with the last strip being 14.5 X 2.5 inches. Keeping the backing folded away from seam, right sides of block facing, sew together with 1/4 inch seam. Trim batting and fold backing over seam and hand stitch. The instruction sheet suggests making one block before cutting all the fabric. Is this clear as mud?

I would imagine you could use different size logs and adjust the back to the size of your prefered block size. I have thought about making one using maybe 2 inch (unfinished) logs. Might have to make a block and see how it works.

I surffed around this morning, and did not find anything, but I'm not a very good surffer! I did find a picture of one that was from the magazine, but that dosen't help much. I think this pattern may have been a for-runner of QAYG! It is really very easy. Hope someone finds a tute. I would be more than happy to try to answers questions, but wouldn't know the 1st thing about doing a tute for it. Good luck with a search.
