Long arm quilting machine question
 

Hi all.

I think this is what the quilting machine is called...long arm? My question is this: is it possible to make my own design for my quilt when someone else quilts it? I am making a Christmas *Dog* theme quilt and would like maybe dog bones for the design. The quilter that is doing my quilt has a bone design but it also has a dog in it and I don't want the dog.

Is it possible to design my own pattern? What file format would that need?

I have made my longarm designs and it is complicated. It would be easier for you to ask your quilter if she could omit the the dogs and put in another bone in their place. I do this all the time. Just draw a bone and make copies and tape the copies over the dog on the panto. It would be easier yet, if she uses a computer. There are also patterns out there that are only bones.

It depends on how your longarmer quilts - computerized (in which case she has to have a digitized pattern in the right format), by panto (she is following a big design behind the machine and needs the bone stuck in everywhere the dog would occur), pantovision, or freehand. Ask her this question and see how she can help you.

making quilting designs for computerized quilting is complicated like digitizing embroidery designs. i have software to design patterns for my PC Quilter. it takes HOURS to get it just right. drawing panto's is much easier... draw one on a sheet of paper making sure that the tail matches the starting point of the pattern. then, just copy as many as you need and tape the papers together.
