Looking for a goodCathedral Window tutorial...
Hey Y'all,
I watched Fons & Porter this morning and they did a show on the Cathedral Window Quilt. I have always thought that was way to hard to even attempt! So I have never even searched to see how it is done. After watching the show today, (thank you PBS) I discovered it isn't near as hard as I thought. I quickly went to the sewing room to try a sample of it. Not to shabby for first quick try but.... When folding my corners over to meet in the middle they didn't come up near as even as they should have. Then I was sure what size to cut the center square up focus fabric. If you have or know of a good tutorial, with pictures would be nice, please let me know. OR if you have close up photos of one you have made that would be great too! if you wouldn't mind sharing. I did a search here but didn't come up with much, that I could find anyway. Also learned today, that when working with WHITE fabric, DON'T PRICK YOUR FINGER with the needle or you might bleed on it! Yep! I did and good thing it was only a test square! lol |

I used the Fons and Porter in a book of theirs. It was very nice. I found that doing it by machine was much better than by hand. I've done a queen sized quilt both ways. The machine one is much better--more accurate and looks better.

Goggle 10 minute block, it looks just like a Cathedral Window, just not nearly as time consuming as the "real" Cathedral Window. I do have the 10 minute block on my list to do. LOL Just don't know when I'll get to it. LOL

I used http://vrgis.sourceforge.net/imagem_quilt.html and completed my first cathedral window quilt. There is also a great tutorial called sunshine creations that while googling stumbled onto involves a lot of ironing but great step by step. I also found today one on here great step by step it was cathedral window all hand sewn they had step by step with great pictures. I am currently working on a new cathedral quilt using the first sight I listed. Hope these few help

Nancy, thanks for the link to Eddies tutorial - I guess I missed it the first time around.

I'm going by Eddie's except I'm hand stitching the bias 'flap'. It's very easy. Somewhat time consuming, but I enjoy doing it so it doesn't matter. I've barely started with just 2 rows finished. I am using his measurements of 8.75" per square and 2.25" for the 'glass'. It will be slightly oversized for a queen bed. I make 24 squares across and will probably also do 24 squares top to bottom.
