with me being new to quilting, I was trying to find the amount of fabric that is needed for each color?
the block tells what size to cut fafric 1 and fabric 2. this is for 1 block. I don't know yet how they figure all fabric needed? I may not make myself clear. Learning as I goooo |

the block tells what size to cut fafric 1 and fabric 2. this is for 1 block. I don't know yet how they figure all fabric needed? I may not make myself clear. Learning as I goooo Eg. if the pattern says ... Fabric 1 ... cut 4 pieces 3"x3" You would need a piece 4x3"=12" long by 3" wide to make those four 3x3" pieces. If you were making 6 blocks for your quilt, then you'd need 6x12"=72" by 3" wide. Quilting fabric is usually 40-44" wide. For simplicity sake, I use 40". So to get that 72x3 .... that would be two WOF at 3" ..... so you need 6" of fabric. Of course ... keep an eye if that same fabric is used anywhere else and be sure to have enough of it. When calculating fabric, too often people calculate for the blocks and forget that they need more of the same for the borders, sashing and binding. And of course, extra is always helpful, just in case you make a cutting mistake. That's how stashes are born!! :) |
I worked this up in EQ and here are the fabric requirements.
The White and the outer bordered are 1 and 3/8ths The Light yellow is 1/2 yard all the rest are 1/4 yard This is based on a 3 by 4 block setting with a 1 and 1/2 inch inner border and a 3 inch outer border finished sizes. Cut the inner border 2 inches and the outer border 3and 1/2 inches. Cut 4 strips of binding 2 and 1/2 inches width. I hope this helps you! Luann in CT |
