Hi Everyone,

I'm looking to buy some tone on tone fabrics, in particular off whites to creams and would like to know where I can find some that aren't real thin and practically see through. The only ones I've found in the past of decent quality were Moda Muslin Mates, but they're quite pricey. Any other suggestions? Thanks so much!

Hi Barb,

Me too, how funny is that?! The price is pretty good, but do you know anything about the quality? Thanks

Thanks Loretta,

I appreciate hearing about your shopping experiences with them. I've only ordered once from them, and it was for sale items that were okay. So, have you specifically ordered any off white or cream tone on tone fabrics from them?

this website tells you exactly which manufacturer makes the fabric so if you stick with the quality ones you know of you should be fine.

if its a manufacturer you don't know you could always post the name on the forum and ask people if they purchased fabric from them.

Thanks Klue,

Sounds like you're saying I can't go wrong as long as I order from one of the quality mfgs like Moda, RJR, etc. Glad to know that.

yup, that has been my rule of thumb with this site and it has served me well - i've never rec'd what i would consider 2nd quality fabric from them but i've always purchased well respected producers like moda, etc.

That shop has a wonderful reputation :D:D:D

When I looked up tone on tones at fabric.com, I found these four pages of them, but I can't see a manufacturer name for any of them. Is there somewhere else to look? Thanks.

If you click on one of the fabrics, look just below where it lists how many yards are available. If you see a red SP that stands for special purchase. It may or may not be a brand name fabric, and even if it is a brand name it could be a lessor quality due to several different reasons.
This is why you are not seeing a manufacturer's name

Thanks for the helpful info, amma. So, what do you get when you use off white or cream TOT fabrics? Do you have any recommendations? Thanks.

I have found some really nice tone on tone fabric at Walmart.. most tone on tone is heavier due to the nature of the process. I have laundered it, put it in a couple of totes that have been used and abused, washed a lot and it has held up well... So I have stuck with that because it is much less expensive.

Wow amma,

That's amazing!! Whoda thunked it? Thanks so much for passing that along to me. Our local Walmart doesn't sell fabric, but one 30 miles down the road still does. I'll look next time I'm there.

Some of their solids are a bit flimsy, but work well in fusible applique, I have used other quilting fabric and once washed the weave has tightened nicely, they get a bad rep but they do have some really nice fabrics, too :D:D:D

Thanks so much amma, I really hadn't thought about the weave tightening up when washed. That's a big help. I know, many folks do complain about their fabrics, but we all shop where we chose to or can afford. I would go there more often, but we're only down the mountain that way maybe once a month. I'll definitely look closer next trip! :-)

I think it is part of the shrinking process LOL or I have a washing machine fairy :D:D:D

I should say it shrinks to a point...I have seen some fabric in all of the shops that was pretty flimsy and I don't know if it would work for all of them :D:D:D

My favorite tone on tone fabrics is Robert Kaufman's Fusions line, specifically Fusions 7 (their #5573). They have a new color called "Vanilla" that looks like it would be the color you are looking for.

Go to www.webfabrics.com and look up Fusions to see all the colors, then go to www.quiltshops.com to see who has it on sale.

This is a very high quality fabric, and I use it in all my quilts as my blenders because it is so beautiful.

I think it is Moda marble prints. They are sort of like batic but more subtle. I really like them for areas where you want it to look like a solid from a distance, but close up there is a variation which gives the quilt some sparkle.
