I've been using my Mothers Sewing machine (ancient singer model from the 1970's). It works but has had a lot of wear and is not really that comfortable to use.

I did a bunch of overtime before going out for surgery, so I was thinking while I am out recovering it might be time to upgrade to something that will be easier/more pleasant to use.
a few people have suggested the Janome 115110 It is available on Overstock.com and seems to be in my price range. I like that it has speed control, sometime when I use a machine at the shop for a lesson I feel like the thing is going to run away on me.

What do you all think? Do you have any other suggestions for other choices in the same range?

I have one, and I like it. Of the computerized machines I've used, it's my favorite. It's identical to the Kenmore 19110. I haven't had any issues with mine. It doesn't make the best buttonholes I've ever seen, but I kind of prefer the "antique" 4-step method.

I use two even more ancient Singers from the 50's to sew so can't help you. I think the older machines work so much better and I love the knee controls.

I don't know about the machine you mentioned, but I've had my Janome DC2010 for a couple of months now and LOVE it! I haven't pieced or quilted yet (that's in the upcoming class at the quilt shop). But for general sewing for a semi beginner it's been great...so neat to learn how to use it, too! I came across a website the other day that is reviewing machines under $500 and thought you might be interested. the machine I am looking at is on the low end...240.00 or so.

SOme of the older machines really are work horses, but this particular one has had issues...has been in and out of needing repair since my mom had it, then it was used for a while by my sister- who did not care for it well....

I bought a Kenmore/Janome from Sears for a great price and it's been going constantly for more than a year and I haven't had any problems with it. It doesn't care what type of thread or fabric you use it just keeps on going. I keep saying that I need to take it in to get it's yearly service but I can't stop long enough for that to happen. That is the other great thing about Sears; thier warranty includes anual checkups. Since Janome makes it I can easily get attachments from Hancock Fabrics or any Janome quilting store
