Low Volume Quilts - what are they?

I would love a definition of a "low volume quilt". They are talked about, photographed...but I can't find a definition and the pictures I've seen aren't alike enough for me to form my own definition. Does anyone know what they are?

valleyquiltermo 01-26-2013 05:06 PM

I never even heard of them I'll be watching for an answer now, enquiring minds and all that, LOL

lynnie 01-26-2013 05:13 PM

Maybe low loft, never heard of the term

DebraK 01-26-2013 05:15 PM

quilts made with very light colors. No contrast.

Wouldn't that be low value? BTW, I love your shoes!

Thank you, Debra!!!

tell us where you have seen pictures - quilts refered to as 'low volume' ...it seems to be a new term to most of us- could be low contrast (as compared to busy-loud quilts) or it could be something else...we would like to see what you are referring to :)

Never in a million years would I have thought of making a quilt with all my low volume (a.k.a. "white") scraps.

slicksister 01-26-2013 06:15 PM

I love this low volume I Spy quilt. I love low volume quilts and yes, they are low contrast usually lots of white.

Those are awesome!

ewecansew 01-26-2013 08:14 PM

I have never heard that term before today and I have been around the quilting industry for over 25 years.

Coverdude 01-26-2013 08:46 PM

Never heard of them....but I'm intrigued.

Toni C 01-26-2013 08:56 PM

From what I'm looking at I'm guessing it is lots of white, very tiny prints on white, not bright colors-pastels simple quilting.

DebraK 01-27-2013 06:19 AM

Thanks ;-) I love the quilt you are working on in your blog.

DebraK 01-27-2013 06:40 AM

yes, I'm not sure why the other phrase is used, but that's what they are.

Murphy1 01-27-2013 07:47 AM

Wow both those links really illustrate "low volume" - I don't think I have enough low volumn fabric to attempt one - I go for brighter colors, but I really like that I Spy quilt - so soft and restful.

twinkie 01-28-2013 03:40 AM

How interesting!

I agree about your shoes.. I have seen your posts before and meant to ask you where you got the pattern? Love, love, love them!!

Several years ago I found a book at JA called Floral Quilts from Grandma's Cupboard published by Leisure Arts by Michelle Blackhurst. It has the same pink lucious look of the web site mentioned above. I got crazy and made 5-6 of the quilts and they are so girly. They are not quilted but I have 6 grandaughters so I am sure they will get them someday.

Elizabeth Hartman has a Craftsy class with modern quilts. One of the projects is a low volume and this is the quilt I made for the class. So, most of the fabrics are low contrast but the shot of color livens things up.

ghquilter53 01-28-2013 05:36 AM

Never heard of this term. Learn something new every day on here. I like the low volume quilts...a modern feel...and I happen to be in the planning stages for one right now and didn't know.

She defines it in the text ... just below the photo of the book ...
"... my low volume (a.k.a. "white") scraps."

Thanks for posting about this ... like the others, I'd never heard about this and I do like the look!
When you think of it, it's much the same as "shabby chique".

quiltstringz 01-28-2013 06:33 AM

Thanks for asking the question and expanding my horizons. I had to peek at Red Pepper quilt because I wouldn't think of them as ever doing anything LOW volume. Have to say I think I like this and might try one of my own.

Sallyjane 01-28-2013 10:23 AM

Fun! I just learned a new term. Low volume floral reminds me of the shabby chic look. The low volume "Eye Spy" of course has the look of pastels and would make a great baby quilt!

Thank you so much! Only 1 hour per 9" block for the quilting! It is waiting for binding, which I'll get finished this week! Then I'll post a picture in the photo section. It was so much fun to quilt! Definitely NOT a low-volume quilt!!!

Thanks for the picture - the color does punch up the quilt! Love the new modern quilts - so many opportunities for quilting!!!

Thank you for asking this question. I didn't know what a low volume quilt was before-great info.

Technically, yes, it would be considered low value. I believe the younger, modern-er (yes I just made that word up) set of quilters has come up with the term "low volume" to describe these quilts, and it seems to have stuck. Low volume because they're on the quieter side, I suppose.

Here's another one. I do like them quite a bit, they feel softer and more feminine to me. I just don't have enough of the right kinds of scraps to make one!

Well, you learn a new thing every day! Low Volume? Who'd have thought it! And aren't they stunning.

It makes the younger set feel like it is "their idea"--like it's something new. People often rename something old and remarket it as if it is a new design (think fashion). :)

QM 01-30-2013 02:50 AM

I agree that they should be called low value. definitely not my thing. I like lots of strong color.
