Has anyone seen the little machine that cuts strips? And little it is. Walmart has one ($50) that cuts strips from 1/2" to 2 1/2". I'm going to get one if only to see how it operates. It just really has my curiousity up. Does anyone have one? I'd love to hear what you think of it. Glenda

Please let us know what you think of it. Sounds interesting.

Holice 08-23-2011 04:34 AM

what is the brand? I have read that the Simplicity takes a lot of learning time and is not as easy as the demo looks.
So what is the brand.

noahscats7 08-23-2011 04:37 AM

I'll have to stop by there and see who makes it.

laughingquilter 08-23-2011 04:44 AM

If it's like the bias tape maker, the time you save in the actual process is taken up in the set up. Good luck with it.

QuiltnNan 08-23-2011 06:07 AM

i couldn't find a $50 one online, but i did find this one... anyone use this?

A friend got one as a gift and asked me to try it out. I can cut with my rotary cutter much faster. You have to be careful, one little wobble and its out of the guide giving irregular results. IMO its not worth the money. Friend may like it as she doesn't use the ruler and rotary much.

auntpiggylpn 08-23-2011 06:28 AM

I had the simplicity one and only used it once. I much prefer to cut with my rotary cutter. I got it as a gift when they first came out and were pricey. It sat on a shelf for a couple of years and just sold it to get it out of the way.

Candace 08-23-2011 06:50 AM

I've heard mostly negative things about it.

Sadiemae 08-23-2011 07:33 AM

I have heard poor reviews...

katsbmr 08-23-2011 08:35 AM

I bought one at a Walmart nearby, returned it once, because something was wrong with it, then got a good one and had to return it. I do not recommend this machine. When I put the fabric through it, the fabric travelled all over the place, and would not cut a strip straight for the life of me. I recommend taking your $50 and buying some cute fabric with it.

zennia 08-23-2011 08:54 AM

Mine sits in the closet. I find it just as fast or faster using my rotary cutter.

sushi 08-23-2011 09:09 AM

I bought one made by Fiskars when I first began to make quilts because I was intimidated by the rotary cutter. Within a week, however, I discovered I could cut more quickly and ACCURATELY using my rotary cutter. The strip cutter was a total waste of money.

MsMel 08-23-2011 09:10 AM

I have one, but I must confess I have had it for 2 years and never taken it out of the box....Sure looks good in my sewing cupboard though:)....

My Christmas present last year was an AccuquiltGo cutter which I am using constantly. While it was an expensive and the additional blades are not cheap either, if one plays with junk fabric?? one can make all kinds of shapes. My most beneficial is the 2-1/2 inch strip cutter which cuts three strips (from salage to salvage). Of course I double up two pieces of fabric at the same time and come up with 12 accurate strips. Waste I intentionally make at 1 inch and throw into scrap quilts. If I do not want strips, then I cross the strips vertically and cut 2-1/2 again, making perfect squares. (Hearsay is that those who have the BabyGo cutter have not been very pleased.)

It works great on coordinating fabrics. I go straight from cutter to the machine and it is done.

Of course, the best advantage is the fact that I have arthritis in my hands and this alleviates all that. Good luck in finding what you want.

I see it did not get great reviews. I think I will pass.

jrtpetey 08-23-2011 01:50 PM

Great info! I too have wondered how well they work.

noahscats7 08-23-2011 04:48 PM

OK...Time for a new question. How many of you were responding about this one? It is definitely not the one I was asking about. If it is an electric one please let me know because I think the one I saw is electric. Thanks again.

I picked up the one they have at Walmart when it was steeply discounted at JoAnn's... I'm so glad I didn't pay full price for it... it's awful! It didn't cut straight or consistently and was much more trouble than rotary cutting... and I hate cutting, so that's saying something. I thought it would save time and money (by avoiding wasted fabric due to ruler slippage or just bad cutting) and it did the exact opposite. :(

I tossed it in the trash.

OneMoreQuilt 08-23-2011 08:36 PM

Love, love, love my Accuquilt Studio for cutting everything including strips. Be careful....I've heard and read poor reviews on the Simplicity strip cutter.

BellaBoo 08-23-2011 08:46 PM

I bought the Simplicity one at Walmart just to cut fast strips to wrap around clothesline to make the fabric bowls. the strips don't have to be accurate for that. It's hard for me to get the accuracy needed for quilting using the machine. It's great for rag rugs, crocheting strips, latch hooking, etc. It wasn't intended for quilting but for crafting.

nycbgirl 08-23-2011 10:17 PM

I bought one and used it for about 15 minutes and prompty returned it! It was very hard to control the fabric and cut a straight line. I use my June Tailor 12 inch ruler with 1/2 inch slots and I love it! I like to make strips.

I got the Simpilicty one at JoAnns with a coupon. Was very excited. Set it up and tried to cut. You have to be very careful how you feed it as it goes wobly (is that a word). I put it back in the box and have not used it since. I use my June Tailor ruler, which I love. There may be a way to keep everything straight, but I am not sure how. Didn't take it back so now sits in my closet. Maybe I will try it again sometime, but not now. I think it's a waste of money. I want the big June Tailor ruler. I have two of her rulers and think they work better. As was said maybe I'll use it for crafts. BrendaK

Little RoO 08-23-2011 10:54 PM

I bought a June Tailor shape cut pro....it is a large mat with slits in it every 1/2"....you just put your rotary cutter at the beginning of the slot and cut....all lines are totally straight....strips cut to whatever wih you want and no waste......cuts strips in seconds......one of my best buys...wouldn't be without mine.
.... gather with coupons they can be found quite cheaply.

JeanLowe 08-24-2011 04:01 AM

Don't buy one. I got one and I used it once and then I got rid of it. To hard to cut and work with.

grammyof4 08-24-2011 04:17 AM

i bought one a few weeks back, tried it out, took it back the same day & ordered a go-baby. it wouldnt stay straight, the fabric, and it didnt want to cut at all

char7439 08-24-2011 04:21 AM

I got one of those strip cutter.Biggest waste of money I ever spent. I now have an accuquilt.Best money I ever spent.I'm 72. Sure makes cutting much easier.I make care quilts for my guild. "SEW VAC DIRECT " has them for $224.99 w/free shipping in the USA.they also have some of the dies on sale. They have layaway and financing.

Goldie 08-24-2011 04:52 AM

Got one from Joann's and never got consistent cuts. Took it back. I am very careful, but this machine is not ready for prime time!!

DonnaC 08-24-2011 04:58 AM

I have the Simplicity electric strip cutter. Like Bella Boo, I have used it mostly for cutting strips to make fabric bowls. It works wonderfully for that purpose.

I have also cut 2" strips for quilting with this machine. It works okay, but only if you are willing to go very slooooowly. If you try to cut fast, the strips wiggle all over the place and you won't get accurate cuts.

Now as for the Simplicity Bias Tape Maker - that thing is pretty awesome! I use mine all the time... love it.

Val in IN 08-24-2011 05:51 AM

I bought one, tried it (many times), returned it, bought the Shape Cut Ruler, Love It!! I think the shape cut is much easier to use and WAY ore accurate. Just my opinion, of course.

ksea 08-24-2011 07:00 AM

I will be interested to see what you think of it!

Agree !!!!!! 100%

noahscats7 08-24-2011 07:51 AM

Thank you all so very much. You have saved me 2 trips to Walmart. I have 2 JT rulers and will just stick to them. I love them and get wonderful results and would recommend them to anyone. Glenda

Must have been in a spending mood. LOL

quiltymom 08-24-2011 08:02 AM

Accuquilt is the way to go!!!!

I agree. Bought one a year ago and it takes forever to set up and the cuts are difficult to keep straight. Took it right back. Rotary cutter is faster and more accurate for me. Ann

Will be interested in knowing how you like it. I have a June Tailor mat and love that. And it was cheaper than those strip cutters.

joycet 08-24-2011 01:15 PM

I bought one. Paid $79.99 plus shipping and I Hate it. You have to be so careful or you will wobble and your strip will be off. I'd much rather cut out with my rotary cutter.

nancy59 08-24-2011 03:31 PM

I have one and really don't like it, but I thought maybe it was just me not getting the adjustments right. I put it up to play with later, when I have nothing better to do.

tmjennings 08-24-2011 03:36 PM

My DIL gave me a Simplicity one last Christmas but I sent it back. Too time consuming and the strips were too irregular.
Don't waste your money.
